Sheens, Tim

Coaching information and club history.

SHEENS, Tim

Tim Sheens is a coach in the National Rugby League, the premier Australian rugby league competition. He currently coaches the Wests Tigers. The feat of the largely unheralded Tigers winning the 2005 Grand Final has been largely attributed to Sheens.

Tim Sheens has a track-record of reforming under-performing teams to premiership victory. He brought the Penrith Panthers to their first final series ever in 1985. He coached the Canberra Raiders to their first premiership in 1989, a feat he repeated in 1990 and 1994.

However, his time with the North Queensland Cowboys (1997-2001) was less successful, and he was released by the club.

Sheens is known for his reserved manner, rarely smiling or displaying emotion on the sidelines. His coaching style includes encouraging players to set ?personal goals?, using a trust system to encourage players to work on their weaknesses on non-training days, and close media management of his players.

In addition to his coaching career - no other man has coached more games in the NRL and its predecessors - he also had a lengthy playing stint with Penrith, playing 164 first grade games 1971-1982.
