Paul Aiton has agreed to terms with the Penrith Panthers club.

His new contract will take him up to the end of Season 2009.

"Paul has been in our top squad for some time now and I'm sure he'll be pushing for a regular starting spot next season," General Manager Rugby League Michael Leary said today.

The re-signing gives Penrith added depth at hooker, with Luke Priddis contracted until the end of next year and Keith Peters recently re-signed for a further two years.

Penrith's 40-Year Team Announced and 2006 Panthers Awards
Thu October 5, 2006
by Matthew O'Neill
Penrith last night named their finest side over the last 40 years with the 1991 Grand Final side dominating the selections whilst only current players Rhys Wesser, Craig Gower and Tony Puletua made the squad.

Brad Fittler, Greg Alexander, Royce Simmons, John Cartwright, Colin Van der Voort, Brad Izzard and Mark Geyer made the all-time Panthers side from the 1991 Premiership-winning squad and Wesser, Gower, Puletua and Ryan Girdler made it from the successful 2003 side. 11 of the 17 players come from Premiership winning sides whilst Alan McIndoe played in the 1990 Grand Final loss.

Wesser's selection at fullback was no surprise with Bob Landers and McIndoe edging out Luke Lewis, Luke Rooney, Paul Smith and Graham Mackay.

Girdler was always going to be one centre and Graheme Moran won the other position ahead of Chris Mortimer and Brad Izzard with the latter named on the bench and Brad Fittler was selected at five-eighth and not centre or lock, which he played all three positions on a regular basis at Penrith. Fittler won the five-eighth position ahead of the long serving Steve Carter and Greg Alexander was always going to be halfback despite the achievements of Craig Gower who has been named on the bench. Gower probably ranks in the top five all-time Penrith footballers but Alexander is clearly No.1 and both have been primarily halfback's.

John Cartwright and Bill Ashurst won the second-row positions ahead of Mark Geyer and Tony Puletua who were both named on the bench. Terry Geary and Tim Sheens were selected at prop with Paul Clarke, Peter Kelly, Matt Goodwin, Geoff Gerard and Darryl Brohman missing out on selection.

Penrith's favourite son Royce Simmons won the hotly contested hooker position ahead of Mike Stephenson and 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis. Gower played his early years at hooker with Penrith but Simmons leadership during the 1980's and his performance in the 1991 Grand Final makes him the ideal choice for hooker.

The team is:

1. Rhys Wesser
2. Bob Landers
3. Grahame Moran
4. Ryan Girdler
5. Alan McIndoe
6. Brad Fittler
7. Greg Alexander
8. Terry Geary
9. Royce Simmons
10. Tim Sheens
11. John Cartwright
12. Bill Ashurst
13. Colin Van Der Voort

Subs:
14. Craig Gower
15. Brad Izzard
16. Mark Geyer
17. Tony Puletua

The side was chosen by a panel of experts and announced at the annual Presentation Night function in Panthers Pavilion.

It was a double celebration for Wesser who took out the Panthers First Grade Player of the Year for the 2006 season. Preston Campbell in his final season at Penrith won the Clubman of the Year and Priddis took out the John Farragher award. Interchange hooker Paul Aiton won the Ben Alexander Rookie of the Year award whilst Jaye Marleitner and David McLean won the lower grade honours.

Awards for 2006 were:

First Grade Player of the Year: Rhys Wesser
Clubman of the Year: Preston Campbell
John Farragher Award: Luke Priddis
Ben Alexander Rookie of the Year: Paul Aiton
Premier League Player of the Year: David McLean
Jersey Flegg Player of the Year: Jaye Marleitner
