Source: www.raiders.com.auThe Canberra Raiders have smashed the Sharks in the first match of the season, pummelling the Cronulla Sharks by 40-12 At Canberra Stadium.
In a dominant display it was the new faces who stood tall for the Raiders with Sam Williams making a stunning debut after a late call up to replace Matt Orford and Blake Ferguson who dominated his opposite number on the right wing.
The only downside for the Raiders were injuries to skipper Alan Tongue who left field after five minutes with a shoulder injury and Joe Picker who injured his knee.
The Sharks appeared to have scored the first try when Nathan Gardner crossed after seven minutes, however the play was called back for a forward pass and the Raiders were off the hook.
A break from the Sharks gave Kade Snowden the opportunity to put Gardner away again, but he was chased down in a fantastic tackle by his former team mate and now Raiders winger Blake Ferguson. However the Sharks received a penalty in the next play and Luke Douglas crashed over two plays later. John Williams converted and it was 6-0 to the Sharks after 13 minutes.
It didn't take long for the Raiders to hit back and it was Ferguson who created the opportunity, when he tapped back a Josh McCrone kick. The ball hit tipped a Cronulla hand on the way through and McCrone managed to latch on to the ball to score. Jarrod Croker converted and it was 6-6 after 18 minutes.
The Raiders scored again with fifteen minutes remaining in the first half through an unlikely name in Dane Tilse, after Bronson Harrison pounced on a Josh McCrone cross field kick. Croker converted and it was 12-6.
Ferguson continued to terrorise the on the right wing, when he climbed high above the pack to latch onto a beautiful cross field kick from Sam Williams. The young Raiders half hit it with pin point accuracy and the athletic Ferguson did the rest. Croker missed the goal but the Raiders up 16-6 with six minutes left in the half.
Sam Williams gave the Raiders a huge chance just before the break when he nailed a huge 40/20 kick to put the Raiders on the attack. The made the most of it too, as Jarrod Croker found himself over in the corner after a beautiful backline play. His sideline conversion made it 22-6 at halftime.
The weight of possession continued in the opening exchanges of the second half with the Sharks defence starting to open up like tinned tuna, with breaks to Joel Thompson and Brett White giving the Raiders the advantage.
This led to the Raiders fifth try, when Daniel Vidot brushed his way over to score in the corner. Croker slotted another kick out wide and it was 28-6 after 52 minutes.
The onslaught continued just a few minutes later when the Raiders ran the ball on the last tackle, as Sam Williams showed maturity beyond his years to put Joe Picker away adjacent to the posts. Croker converted and it was 32-6 with 22 minutes left on the clock.
Ferguson was denied his second of the afternoon when he put his foot into touch attempting to score, after another towering Josh McCrone kick put the Sharks under pressure again. However it was the Sharks who scored next through fullback Nathan Gardner. John Williams converted and it was 34-12 to the Raiders.
It didn't take long for the Raiders to hit back though as Glen Buttriss hit and spun his way towards the line to send Shaun Fensom away for his first try of the year. Croker converted and it was all green at 40-12.
Sharks replacement Paul Aiton was sent from the field with five minutes left for an alleged head butt on Joel Thompson, following on in a scuffle after a penalty against Cronulla for a late hit on Ferguson.
In the end the Raiders were too strong and have showed some early season form which will please their fans.
CANBERRA RAIDERS 40 (Josh McCrone, Dane Tilse, Blake Ferguson, Jarrod Croker, Daniel Vidot, Joe Picker, Shaun Fensom Tries; Jarrod Croker 6 goals) defeated CRONULLA SUTHERLAND SHARKS 12 (Luke Douglas, Nathan Gardner Tries; John Williams 2 Goals) at Canberra Stadium, Crowd 13,450.

Source: www.sharks.com.auThe Sharks have today announced the signing of Papua New Guinea international and current Penrith NRL player Paul Aiton to a two-year contract beginning in 2010.
Aiton, who impressed while representing the Kumuls in the 2008 World Cup, will bring some explosive attacking skills to the Sharks in the hooker position next season.
Sharks coach Ricky Stuart in confirming the signing, explained that Aiton's abilities were brought to his attention while coaching the Australian team in the Centenary World Cup at the end of last year.
"I definitely liked what I saw at the World Cup from Paul and he has continued his good form and has had a strong season with his club this year," Stuart said. "While he is still a young man Paul has got some experience behind him at both NRL and international level and will certainly complement the talented youngsters we have coming through at the club."
In emphasising Stuart's comments about Aiton's credentials, the 24-year-old now has over 60 NRL games to his credit and has played all 15 games in the top grade with the Panthers this season. He has also been a regular member of the Kumuls squad since 2004 and was named PNG's 2008 Player of the Year, leading the way in his nation's spirited performances at the recent World Cup.
The signing of Aiton continues an impressive Sharks recruiting drive which is building on the talented young roster of players they have on board in 2009.
The Sharks now add Aiton's name to the earlier signings of utility John Morris from the Tigers and Adam Cuthbertson from the Manly Sea Eagles.
In putting together a formidable NRL squad for both 2010 and beyond, the Sharks have also been active in securing some outstanding young talent, with highly-rated halfback Albert Kelly, speedy outside back Nathan Gardiner and forwards Broderick Wright, Siosaia Vave and Rodney Moefaauo joining the club from next season.
