Wests Tigers is pleased to announce the signing of Braith Anasta on a two-year deal from 2013.

One of rugby league's most highly regarded players, Anasta will join Wests Tigers after his commitments with the Sydney Roosters finish this season.

Wests Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys said the Club was very excited about securing the services of Anasta.

"Braith is a very experienced campaigner who continues to perform at the highest level,'' Mr Humphreys said.

"His leadership, professionalism and knowledge of the game will be invaluable to our Club.

"Everyone at Wests Tigers from players, coaches, sponsors and members are very much looking forward to welcoming Braith to the Club in 2013."

Anasta said he was excited to join Wests Tigers.

"I look forward to making a big contribution to an already strong and talented playing group under Tim Sheens over the next two years ,'' Anasta said.

"While I look forward to the challenges ahead, my immediate priority remains focused on this season. There's a great young squad here at the Roosters and I have a massive ambition to make 2012 a memorable year for the club.

"I am incredibly proud to have captained such a special club.

"From the ball boys to the Chairman, the players, coaches, staff, sponsors and members - I've made so many friends here and learnt so much from everyone associated with the Club."

Sydney Roosters Chief Executive Stephen Noyce said that while Braith's immeasurable leadership and experience will be greatly missed, the Sydney Roosters will maintain its commitment to developing its youth.

"It's sad to be losing a great club man and friend to the players, coaches, staff, sponsors and members like Braith. Braith is an inspiration to all at the club for the way he conducts himself both on and off the field,'' Mr Noyce said.

"On behalf of everyone associated with the Sydney Roosters, we wish Braith all the very best and thank him for his outstanding contribution to our club.

"In the meantime, we look forward to Braith being a big part of the Roosters squad for the remainder of 2012."

18 holes with Braith Anasta
Mon February 27, 2012

As a docile armada of giant ships moor off the Illawarra coast and the Port Kembla steel mill chugs away like an angry though immobile dragon, I'm about to take on Sydney Roosters' skipper Braith Anasta over 18 holes at the windy, open links that is Wollongong Golf Club. This, friends, is Hump Day gold.

Yes, readers, in an insult to those who work for a living, your correspondent and his mate "Cass" (who was an Olympic-class 1500m runner who would have run for South Africa in 1972 if there hadn't been Apartheid and who migrated to New Zealand where he sired a daughter who won New Zealand Idol and married Pita Alatini an All Black) took on Anasta and his mate Luke who played a handful of games for the Dragons and Rabbitohs, and now sells golf carts for money. Such is life's rich tapestry.

And so we shake hands with Captain Chook on the first tee and pretty much get straight into it. This is the golf course Anasta was a guest player in the New South Wales PGA golf tournament in November. Anasta, you see, is the best golfer in the NRL. He plays off a handicap of +1, which means he has to shoot one-under to make par. (It's a golf thing.)

Whatever, he's a big fit unit who gives it a whack and a friendly fellah to have a yarn with as you mosey around the golf course. (Well, he and Luke get about in a cart. But we won't hold it against them. They're probably tired from all that ... golf, and golf-cart selling.)

And so we golf. And it's a super way to spend a Wednesday in Wollongong. And after a dozen holes of windy, earthy fun we've discovered we've forgotten to score. Hence it could be anyone's game. But no-one cares. And so we talk footy.

So, Mr Anasta: In 2010 the Chooks went all-but, making the grand final after a brilliant late-season run. Last season, nothing short of duds. What happened? How does a team with all that talent lose the mojo? What in name of sweet Stan Jurd just happened?

"Mate, it's a good question," admits Anasta. "After the season we had a series of meetings and conversations with 'Smithy' [Brian Smith] and the coaching staff, both as a group and one-on-one. And while we were happy with the way we finished it was a very disappointing year. And we obviously didn't reach the expectations we had of ourselves."

So what came out of those meetings? What was the post-mortem? "Our attitude let us down a lot. We had that fantastic year in 2010 and a lot of our guys got ahead of themselves. A lot of us did. As a club we thought it was just going to happen and we let our guard down. In areas we were great the year before we were poor. Our discipline was particularly poor.

"But once our discipline improved, so did our season. And we finished really strongly. There was a direct correlation."

Another correlation was the axing of Todd Carney, Nate Myles and Frank-Paul Nu'uausala after Round 21. The Roosters then won their last four games straight including 36-26 over St George and 40-8 over Melbourne in Melbourne.

You wonder how the conversation went for Anasta, telling his pals they were dropped. "It was tough," concedes Anasta. "At the time I was very close with the boys. To be honest ... when we made the decision to stand them down we were under the presumption that they'd be back the following week. We thought they'd miss a week then come back to training and earn the right to play again. We had no idea they wouldn't be back.

"So yeah, mate, that was tough. And it still is to this day. Todd and Nate were both great servants of the club. They did so many great things and it was a shame they had to leave and not get a chance to redeem themselves. And I know they're both very disappointed about it."

Looking ahead, as footballers must, Anasta does see positives for the Chooks in 2012. "We've got a really big pre-season planned and we go back in a few weeks and see how we go. We've recruited a few talented young guys like Peni Tagive and Jack Bosden from the Dragons and we see big things from them in the future.

"On top of that ... I think we've got some room to move in the cap!"

So, is he happy at the Chooks and his one-year deal? "Yeah ... It's gonna be tough, though. I've signed for 2012 with the Chooks but I definitely feel like I've got two more years in me, this year and another one. Things might get a bit tricky there."

Because they might punt him? "Well, yeah [laughs]. But I'm not going to worry about it. I'm going to talk to Smithy and see how we go. But either way I want to play as well as I can. I mean, if at any stage I feel like I'm not performing the best that I can and not benefiting the team, I'll be the first to put my hand up. But the shape I'm in, the way I'm feeling and playing five-eighth, I definitely feel like I've got two years in me."

Does he reckon long-serving NRL players - not just one-club men - should receive a dispensation under the salary cap? "Definitely. I've been playing the game for 12 seasons. I've put a lot into the game, like a lot of blokes. But the Roosters don't get any exemption at all. And I think it's wrong and they should change it.

"They do have exemptions but they're for guys who've spent ten years at the one club. Which in today's game is nearly impossible. And the exemption itself is only okay. The club gets $100k off for someone like Anthony Minichiello."

Seem to be a lot of blokes in England because of it, you offer. "Exactly. Look at the number of blokes who've gone over. Brett Finch, Ryan Hoffman, Danny Buderus, Matt King, all these great players. The comp in England's almost as strong as it is here. We're weakening our comp, strengthening theirs. The Players Association has to stand up and be heard."

Would he go to England? Top up the super? "Not at all. I've never really wanted to. I love Australia, my family and friends. And there's things here I want to do. I mean, if my time's up here and I'm not good enough to play first grade rugby league in Australia, I've got other avenues.

"I don't want to need to go to England for financial security. I mean, I wouldn't completely rule it out. But unless something comes out the blue I'll be staying in Australia."

Outside of rugby league and whacking golf balls about, Anasta is a regular commentator for Fox Sports' Toyota Cup coverage and worked on three first-grade games this year. Elsewhere he's starting up the Speed Agility Academy with sprint coach Roger Fabri and will soon wed his spunky sweetheart Jodi from the telly.

Good luck to him. Good fellah.
