Aspinwall: Fitness proving to be the key for Hull FC
Sat March 24, 2012
Source: www.hullfc.com

The fitness of the Hull FC pack has played a big part in the side's run of three consecutive wins, according to second row Martin Aspinwall.

The former Castleford Tigers and Huddersfield Giants player joined the Black and Whites in the off season and says he has been impressed by the condition of the Hull forwards.

Reserving special praise for Andy Lynch, Danny Houghton and Danny Tickle, Aspinwall says Hull's fitness is helping the Airlie Birds get on top of their opponents, as well as giving head coach Peter Gentle more options from the bench.

"We've had a few people pick up knocks during the game in recent weeks, myself included, but everybody is really putting their hands up and grafting for the team," he said.

"A couple of players have had to switch positions during the game, but they've got on with the job and done it really well.

"I think it's testament to our fitness as well. People like Danny Houghton, Andy Lynch and Danny Tickle can work hard for the full 80 minutes if needs be and that really takes pressure off the other forwards.

"It's also giving the chance for Peter to make the most of his interchanges, particularly if one of us goes down, and with the likes of Jamie Ellis able to play 9 or 7, we've got a few options in the team and it's really working well for us at the moment."

However, while Aspinwall has praised the flexibility and fitness of his teammates, the former England player says he is hoping to play a bigger part himself in the coming weeks after picking up a few knocks recently.

"I got a finger in my eye in the first half against Widnes and I couldn't see much out of it. It was really frustrating that I couldn't go back on," he said.

"Coming on the back of the shoulder injury I got the week before, it's been a bit stop-start for me personally. I just can't seem to get back on the field for my second spell, but hopefully I can look to build up my minutes up in the coming weeks, starting against Castleford.

"I've been looking forward to going back to The Jungle. It was a game I highlighted at the start of the season and we are going there full of confidence. Castleford haven't had the best of runs so far but we know what they are capable of and we won' underestimate them."

Hull welcome Aspinwall back
Mon January 2, 2012
Hull FC have lifted their suspension on new signing Martin Aspinwall after he was punished in court for being drunk and disorderly.

The 30-year-old former Wigan Warriors, Huddersfield Giants and Castleford Tigers second rower, who has yet to play a match for Hull after signing for them in the close season, will return to pre-season training next week after his club suspension was lifted.

Aspinwall was suspended indefinitely pending an internal investigation by the club and the outcome of police charges following an incident earlier this month.

Yesterday he was given a £300 fine by Hull magistrates after being found guilty of being drunk and aggressive on December 18 and has also been fined by his club.

Hull are still reeling from the suspension of former player Martin Gleeson for failing a drugs test and former chief executive James Rule and ex-conditioner Ben Cooper for their part in the affair.

However, Hull director of rugby Shaun McRae said the club were satisfied that Aspinwall was guilty of a minor misdemeanour and he would be welcomed back.

He said: "Following an extensive investigation into the issue which occurred involving Martin, we are confident that this was only a small incident and the fine and suspension more than satisfies any suitable punishment.

"It seems his previous record has probably gone against him in this instance. However, he understands he has done wrong and must accept the consequences of this.

"Whilst it may only be a minor affair, it is a timely reminder to Martin and the rest of the squad that certain behaviour is not acceptable and will be dealt with accordingly.

Aspinwall spent five weeks in prison this summer for dangerous driving, four weeks after receiving a suspended sentence for assault.

McRae added: "We have had lengthy discussions with Martin since he arrived at the club about his opportunity to rebuild his career here and the fact he needs to be a role model to our fans and he has consistently echoed his commitment to serving the club and its supporters with his performance this coming season.

"That will be his focus in the coming weeks as he rejoins the squad and looks to try and earn a place in Peter Gentle's side for the forthcoming fixtures."
