McDermott backs Bailey ban

Leeds Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott has backed the game's disciplinary chiefs for handing a three-match ban to one of his players.

Prop forward Ryan Bailey was given the maximum sentence for a grade C offence after admitting making deliberate contact with referee Richard Silverwood during the Stobart Super League champions' 26-18 win over Warrington Wolves last Friday.

Bailey, who appeared to push Silverwood out of the way in the build-up to the visitors' second try, pleaded guilty when he appeared in front of the Rugby Football League's disciplinary committee, who also fined him £300.

Bailey's Leeds team-mate Brent Webb avoided suspension after being charged with a similar offence, although the full-back was given a verbal warning regarding his future conduct and fined £300.

McDermott, who accompanied both players to the hearings at Red Hall, said: "We would like to thank the disciplinary for the hearing and we accept the findings in both counts.

"Common sense has prevailed in the case of Brent Webb. Whilst he was found guilty, the panel accepted that there was no cynical intention on Brent's part.

"The club support the panel's judgement on Ryan. We are proud in our sport for the respect we have for the officials in rugby league and this case has been rightly dealt with.

"Ryan pleaded guilty to the charge and he will now work hard over the next three weeks, after which he will be in contention for selection again."

Leeds Rhinos are set to welcome back England international Ryan Bailey for this Friday's massive clash with Warrington Wolves at Headingley Carnegie, kick off 8pm.
Bailey has not played since the Heinz Big Soup World Club Challenge after suffering an Achilles injury however he is not back fit and returns to the squad.

Bailey replaces Paul McShane as the only change from the 19 man squad that was named for last Friday's win at Castleford.
