Bartlett signs for North Queensland

Melbourne Storm backrower Matt Bartlett has been released by the club with immediate effect in order to sign with the North Queensland Cowboys.

"I've really enjoyed my time in Melbourne. I can't thank the club enough for the opportunity they gave me and for making me feel so welcome," said Bartlett.

"Working under Craig has been fantastic for my development as a player, and it's a great club to be a part of.

"But when the opportunity came to sign with North Queensland, I grabbed it with both hands."

Storm coach Craig Bellamy said it was only bad luck with injuries that prevented him from playing more first-grade games with the Storm.

"Matt made a great deal of progress in his development here in Melbourne, and he was a terrific person to have around the club," said Bellamy.

"There were times when he would have come into first-grade calculation, but unfortunately injuries prevented that from happening.

"We're very disappointed that he is leaving the club, but we didn't want to stand in his way if he's going to be offered a greater opportunity to play first-grade elsewhere."

Bartlett, 23, played three games for the Storm since signing with the club in 2006.

"I just feel, at this point in time, my chances of playing regular first-grade football are much better at the Cowboys," said Bartlett.

"I'm looking forward to playing under Graham Murray, and to play alongside players like Johnathan Thurston and Matt Bowen is an exciting prospect for me."

Hailing from northern New South Wales, Bartlett developed into a promising junior footballer at Wingham Tigers.

In 2002, the Newcastle Knights noticed his talents and signed him to their junior system. After four years plying his trade with the Knights' junior and lower grades, Bartlett signed a one-year deal with the Melbourne Storm in 2006.

Bartlett re-signed for a further two years with the Storm at the beginning of 2007 after showing a great deal of promise in the New South Wales Premier League and Queensland Cup.
