Bird returns to tackle Sharks

NSW State of Origin representative Greg Bird will make a timely return to the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans' starting line-up for Saturday night's Women in League themed home clash against his former club the Cronulla Sharks at Skilled Park.

Jetstar Titans Coach John Cartwright today named Bird in the back row and forwards Luke O'Dwyer and Brenton Lawrence on an extended six-man bench to take on the Sharks in the wake of last Friday night's disappointing 31-8 loss to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Bird, who spent seven seasons with the Sharks from 2002-08, missed the Rabbitohs clash after being unable to back-up due to soreness following the second Origin match last Wednesday night but returns to add some grunt in both attack and defence.

In other team changes, back rower Anthony Laffranchi will push up into the front row while utility O'Dwyer and prop Brenton Lawrence, who has been playing for Queensland Cup feeder club Burleigh Bears, have been named on an interchange bench with two to be omitted.

Cartwright said he expected Bird to be raring to go against his former club with the benefit of a 10-day break between matches since Origin 2.

"He'll be nice and fresh too. He hasn't played since the Origin and has had a break from training, he only came back to training on Monday,'' said Cartwright.

"So he'll be nice and fresh, and playing against his old club I expect him to lead the way for us.''

With several members of the squad suffering from minor injury concerns, Cartwright said he wouldn't be able to finalise a line-up until after the club's last lead-up training session at Skilled Park on Friday morning.

The Jetstar Titans have won three from six match matches against the Sharks, with those three wins all coming in matches played on the Gold Coast.

As part of this weekend's Harvey Norman Women In League Round celebrations across the NRL, the Nerang Under-17s girls rugby league team will play a special exhibition match against an all-girls team from Norths Ipswich at halftime in Saturday night's match against the Sharks.

There will also be an Under 11s exhibition match featuring girls from Junior Rugby League clubs all across Gold Coast, Brisbane & Ipswich, who play against the boys on a weekly basis.

The Jetstar Titans have also donated 150 tickets to the Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League to reward the hard working women who give up their time to help kids play footy.

Fans are also being encouraged to wear pink to the game, with pink scarves to be sold at the ground on the night.

Origin stars named for Titans double header

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have named State of Origin representatives Ashley Harrison and Greg Bird in a 17-man squad for Friday night's double header against the Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium.

Jetstar Titans coach and NSW Blues Assistant Coach John Cartwright will be hoping the club's star duo will be fit to back-up after tomorrow night's opening Origin match at Suncorp Stadium when the club returns to action following last weekend's Round 11 bye.

Jetstar Titans Assistant Coach Steve Murphy today named centre Bodene Thompson to make his return to the field after a virus kept him out of the Round 10 loss to Manly, with replacement centre Joseph Tomane expected to return to the Queensland Cup for Ipswich if Thompson is given the all-clear to return later in the week.

Both teams are one win a piece from their two previous clashes at Suncorp Stadium since the double-header initiative began in 2009, with the Jetstar Titans edging out a 25-24 win last year and the Dogs winning 23-16 in 2009.
