Nathan Blacklock announces immediate retirement
Tue August 22, 2006

Hull FC have agreed to release Nathan Blacklock from his contract with immediate affect at his request.

Former Australian Test Winger Blacklock has been plagued this season by a chronic knee injury and he will now retire from the game and return home.

Hull FC Head Coach Peter Sharp, said: "Tingha (Nathan) has enjoyed a marvellous career, he has achieved some things in Rugby League that most people can only dream about. He has contributed an awful lot to this club over the last two years and we wish him all the best in the future."

Nathan Blacklock, explained his decision: "I'm disappointed I've had to call it a day, but I simply can't give the 100% I want to anymore because of injuries. I can't put my heart and soul into playing.

"Everyone at the club from the coaching staff, to the players and the office staff have been great to me and I wish the team all the best for the play-offs and the future.

"There are some good young players who deserve a chance, they will have more enthusiasm for the game than I can offer now."

Last season Blacklock crossed for 22 tries in all competitions. The popular Test winger amazed the crowd with some wonderful pieces of solo skills and his threat when the side are attacking, he can pop up just about anywhere. He scored hat tricks away at Huddersfield Giants, at home to Leigh Centurions and not forgetting his memorable first half effort against Warrington Wolves in the first Play Off game of 2005.

This season Blacklock has continually played through the pain barrier and has earned the praise from his teammate for his commitment to the cause. In his farewell season Nathan has scored thirteen tries in 21 appearances.

Blacklock has been a fans' favourite at The KC Stadium and good luck messages have regularly been sent to the club in recent weeks. One such message came from The Smith Family (Katriona, Dawn, Rob, Tania, Lee, Steffanie) read: "From all of us in the Smith house we would just like to say to you thank you for all the excitement, joy, fun and pleasure that you have give us in watching you build our Hull F.C team up step by step. You have played a big part in the team and you will be deeply missed. We have watched you play in form and help the team through the hard times and through the good times.

"I think that you have been one of the best players that have walked into that Hull dressing room and you will be one of the best walking back out. So good luck for the future in whatever you may do.

"You have brought us so much joy in watching you go from strength to strength. So we wish you all the best. And remember you are Black and White for life you will always be in our 'FC' tribe. So let us sing the old faithful song for you one last time as we say our last good byes."
