Brideson named Wynnum's best

Former Canterbury Bulldogs forward Adam Brideson has capped a stellar season with the Seagulls by being crowned the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club Player of the Year.

Brideson polled maximum points in round 20 and 21 to edge out Luke Dalziel Don for the top award by just one point.

Dalziel Don led the votes throughout the early rounds but ultimately it was his late season injury - and Brideson's consistency - that denied the Queensland Residents star the top gong.

Chris Muckert and Matt Seamark finished behind Dalziel Don.

Wynnum Manly executive officer Mark Rockley said Brideson was "outstanding" in his first season with the Seagulls.

"His rugged style of football and no frills approach laid the foundation for us in 2008," Rockley said.

"Averaging just over 40 tackles a game and showing attacking flair as a ball running back rower he was consistently our best this season.

"His leadership and experience was also a great asset to the team."

Patten wins back-to-back Player of the Year awards
Thu October 4, 2007
Source: www.bulldogs.com.au

For the second year in a row Bulldogs fullback Luke Patten has been named as the Bulldogs Player of the Year. In accepting the award Patten said, "I'm honoured to win this again. It means a lot as the voting is determined by your team mates who are the best judges as to whether you are putting in or not on the field."

Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes commented, "Luke's professionalism is second to none and all the hard work and commitment he puts into his training pays off for him every game."

Bulldogs centre Daryl Millard was named as the Rookie of the Year. In his first year at the club he played in 25 NRL games and finished second on the Bulldogs try scorers list with 13 tries.

Folkes said, "Daryl had a good first up year and I know in 2008 he will only get better."

Premier League Player of the Year also went to a previous winner in Adam Brideson. He captained the side, taking it to the Minor Premiership and the Grand Final qualifier.

Jersey Flegg Player of the Year was picked up by Heka Nanai. The winger was strong in both defence and attack and has been rewarded for his efforts by being picked in the Junior Kangaroos side to tour Fiji.

Clubman of the Year was awarded to Corey Hughes who has played 240 club games for the Bulldogs over 11 years. He was a member of the Bulldog 2004 NRL Premiership-winning team.

Willie Tonga picked up The Peter Warren Medal for service to the community. Over the past 12 months Willie has been involved in many community initiatives including a drug and alcohol awareness program that was introduced into several schools throughout Queensland; the Coonamble High School Sportsmentor program; Bankstown Youth Week Festivities; a National Aboriginal Sports Corporation coaching clinic; the NRL Players' Charity Christmas party; and Kick4Kids program.

Tonga is a huge role model in his home town of Cherbourg in South East QLD, which he visits regularly and speaks to the local youth about future planning, goal setting and self-discipline. He regularly sends football boots (his own and those of other Bulldogs players) and training clothing to Cherbourg Community Health as rewards for kids who meet their goals and to disadvantaged children to help build their self-esteem and show them they are being thought of.

Bulldogs CEO Malcolm Noad commented, "Willie is a quiet bloke who doesn't search for accolades for the work he does in the community. He just sees an opportunity to help someone out and takes it."

The Bulldogs.com.au Player of the Year Award, voted on by the registered visitors to the Bulldogs website, went to second rower Sonny Bill Williams, who finished the year as the Bulldogs leading try scorer. Votes were tallied after each game of the NRL season.
