Tiger Brough roars to Northern Rail Cup award
Thu March 8, 2007
Source: www.rfl.uk.com

Castleford Tigers' scrum half Danny Brough becomes this season's fourth Northern Rail Cup Player of the Round after an outstanding performance in the Group One encounter against arch rivals Featherstone Rovers last Sunday.

The former York and Hull halfback put the boot into Rovers with a superb display of tactical kicking and helped Tigers to an impressive 22-16 win at the Chris Moyles Stadium in front of more than 3,000 fans.

Brough, recruited from Hull last year when Tigers were in the engage Super League, decided to stay with Castleford for their Northern Rail Cup and National League campaigns and has been one of the club's most consistent performers as they have posted four wins in as many outings.

Danny's individual battle with a previous Northern Rail Cup 'Player of the Round' winner, Rovers' halfback Paul Handforth, was one of the highlights of a Group One match played in poor weather conditions and Borough emerged on the winning side.

Terry Matterson, the Castleford Tigers head coach, said:

"It was a really tough game for us in dreadful weather conditions but Danny's kicking game shone through.

"Danny, together with Andrew Henderson, steers our team around the park and his kicking skills are a major part of his armoury.

"I think that Danny sees a future with us and that was why he opted to stay with us at the end of last season.

"Everyone expects us to win every game this season so it's going to be tough for this young team

"But we've got some very talented young players and we're very happy with the start we've made to the season and the Northern Rail Cup campaign."

Notes:

* The Northern Rail Cup is an exclusive competition for members of the RFL's National Leagues together with invited members of the Rugby League Conference Premier Division.

* The Northern Rail Cup 'Player of the Round' is awarded after each of the qualifying rounds and is selected by representatives of the sponsors, Northern Rail, and the RFL Marketing Department.
