Brown looks forward to Batley test
Thu December 31, 2009

Alex Brown is relishing the chance to impress in the Giants opening pre-season friendly against Batley. The 22-year-old will take his place on the wing in Saturday's clash at Mount Pleasant Stadium, kick off 12 midday (Jan 2nd).

It will be Brown's first run-out in the claret and gold since he secured a one-year full-time contract at the end of last season.

He will then be hoping to feature in the Giants' trial games that follow before joining Batley on a dual contract for the start of their Championship campaign.

But with Huddersfield being able to re-call him from the Mount Pleasant club at 24 hours' notice, Brown knows the sooner he can start making an impression, the sooner he can build on his one Super League appearance at St Helens last season.

"Saturday is a big game for me, and I can't wait," said Brown.

"Although I know I'm going to be starting at Batley this season - and I'm excited about that - there's still a chance of playing for Huddersfield in Super League next season if I keep playing well in the Championship.

"But I also know I'll do myself a lot of good with Huddersfield if I can play well this weekend.

"My ultimate aim is obviously to earn a longer-term contract at the Giants, and playing well on Saturday is the first step in that process.

"After finding it tough at the start of pre-season training, I'm loving it now and really want to achieve as much as I can in the game. I know how important this year is for me."

Entry is priced at £10 for adults, £5 for concessions and £2 for under 16's and supporters can pay on the turnstiles at Mount Pleasant Stadium.

Giants boost Batley strength

Huddersfield Giants and Batley Bulldogs have agreed to enhance their partnership in a move that sees three of the Super League clubs most promising up and coming players becoming "dual registered".

Centre Josh Griffin, winger Alex Brown and halfback Kyle Wood will be the first Giants players to take advantage of the newly implemented RFL system.

Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis commented:

"When the new rules were first mooted it made sense for us to speak to Batley first in respect of any players who we felt had outgrown reserve grade yet were not week in week out engage Super League starters.

"This rule allows these three players the freedom to move between the two clubs first grade teams in consultation with Nathan Brown and Karl Harrison and gives us a great opportunity to see them tested in a strong, competitive Championship structure.

"I firmly believe it's the right thing for their personal development and further believe that the influence of Karl Harrison will complement the work done on a weekly basis when training here with Nathan and the rest of the Giants first grade squad."

Batley Bulldogs chief Karl Harrison commented:

"Its great to be able to work with Huddersfield to bolster our ranks with three very good players. I have made no secret of my desire for a centre and Josh is a big strong athletic boy who everyone has high hopes for. Outside him Alex Brown is a powerhouse winger who scored bucketfuls of tries last year in reserve grade and the Giants have taken a shot at him in full time this year and expect him to be even better having experienced the full time environment.

"In Kyle Wood we get one of the most promising young halves around. He had a good year at Sheffield last time and has a super kicking game and again with the advantage of full time training we are all hoping we can further bring him on. I have already spoken of how well the squad has come together in pre-season and these additions will give me some more quality options in key areas and, in all likelihood, will complete the squad for now."
