Source: www.qrl.com.auFORMER Queensland and Australian forward Dane Carlaw had arguably his best game this season for Wynnum Manly as the Seagulls took another step towards a finals berth with a hard-fought win over the Mackay Cutters.
Carlaw produced several great off-loads and stinging tackles in defence for the Seagulls, who overcame a two point deficit at half-time to beat the Cutters 22-12 in a crucial clash at BMD Kougari Oval yesterday.
The big Broncos forward capped off a strong outing with a second half try that put the hosts in front 16-12 in the 54th minute.
The Cutters were leading the match 12-10 before Carlaw barged over outwide in a defining moment of the game.
Wynnum Manly extended the lead to 10 points in the 65th minute when halfback Matt Seamark converted a try to replacement forward Charlie Gubb.
Gubb slammed the ball down over the line after receiving a great flick pass from teammate John Te Reo.
The try had Seagulls fans in full voice, and the noise coming out of the famous Chook Pen could grow even louder in upcoming weeks given the Bayside club has now climbed into sixth spot.
The Seagulls will remain in that position if Tweed Heads beat the Burleigh Bears in this afternoon's local derby at Pizzey Park.
Mackay will now look to re-group ahead of its must-win clash against the Northern Pride on Saturday night.
Despite coming away from BMD Kougari Oval empty handed, the Cutters displayed some positive signs.
Mackay showed great character to claw its way back into the contest after conceding the first two tries of the game.
The Cutters scored their first try of the afternoon in the 28th minute when Queensland Rangers winger Bureta Faraimo received a spectacular pass from Darren Griffiths to cross in the corner.
Michael Comerford nailed a difficult sideline conversion to reduce Wynnum's lead to four points.
The Cutters then drew level at 10-10 when a simple play from a scrum win resulted in a try to bustling forward Dylan Smith.
Comerford's conversion saw the visitors take a 12-10 lead into the half-time break.
Wynnum Manly's two first-half tries were scored by Jason Moon, with his first requiring a close inspection by the video referee after he danced his way down the left touch line in the 10th minute after accepting a long pass from skipper Luke Dalziel-Don.
Moon's second came from a superbly weighted kick from Seamark, who put the ball on the toe after the Seagulls had stretched the Cutters defence with a number of sweeping backline movements.

Source: www.broncos.com.auDANE Carlaw has been hit with a 'crusher' tackle charge out of last night's win over Newcastle but will be free to play against the Roosters with an early guilty plea.
Carlaw was sanctioned for his 29th minute tackle on Dan Tolar with a dangerous contact - unnecessary neck pressure charge.
But his clean record will help him. The charge carries 100 base points but the 25 percent cut for the early-guilty plea and another 25 per cent for his seven-year clean record means Carlaw will only record 50 carry-over points.
Once he pleads guilty he will be free to play against the Roosters at Gosford's Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday night and has been named in the team by coach Anthony Griffin.
Griffin named the same team that beat the Knights 17-6, with Josh Hoffman expected to miss one more week with a lower leg injury.
Ben Te'o retains his spot in the centres.
