Roosters duo off to New Zealand
Thu May 5, 2011
Source: www.sydneyroosters.com.au

Injured Sydney Roosters stars Sam Perrett and Anthony Cherrington have joined fellow NRL players Nathan Cayless, Chase Stanley and Nu Akeripa visiting Christchurch as the first ever Test played on the Gold Coast between Australia and New Zealand this week pays tribute to the courage of disaster affected communities on both sides of the Tasman.

Ahead of Friday's VB Test, the NRL, ARL, NZRL, NSWRL, QRL and Gold Coast Titans have joined forces with Jetstar and NRL sponsor, IHG, to assist in bringing to the Gold Coast 250 members of the Rugby League community and emergency workers from Christchurch, the original venue for the match that had to be changed following February's devastating earthquake.

This week's visit to Christchurch saw Perrett and Cherrington join NRL and NZRL staff for a series of activities among schools and communities affected by the earthquake, before accompanying the group to the Gold Coast in time for Friday's Test match.

Joining the New Zealand group in the stands on Friday night will be 250 members of the Queensland Rugby League community from flood-affected areas as well as Australian emergency workers who were part of the state's rescue efforts.

Prior to kick off, the Skilled Park crowd will acknowledge and thank 50 Australian emergency service and defence personnel and 90 of their New Zealand counterparts who will represent all those involved in the Queensland and New Zealand rescue efforts when they come together on the field for a lap of honour.

As well as the VB Test, the group visiting from Christchurch will also attend Sea World, one of the Gold Coast region's iconic theme parks and Sunday's (May 8) Telstra Premiership match between the Titans and the Warriors at Skilled Park.

Bulldogs down Roosters in opening NRL trial
Sat February 12, 2011
Source: www.bulldogs.com.au

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have opened their 2011 trial campaign with a hard fought, come from behind victory over the Sydney Roosters in the wet at Leichhardt Oval.

The Bulldogs trailed by 22 points to 12 two minutes out from the three quarter time break, before tries to Josh Reynolds and Tim Lafai secured the result in the final quarter.

Reynolds was one of a number of young players singled out for praise by head coach Kevin Moore after the match, with the halfback scoring twice in the victory.

Moore said that the win, while irrelevant in terms of the season ahead, was nonetheless important given the way his young side protected its lead in the final ten minutes of play.

"Momentum is such an important thing in the game today and there were certainly times last year where the momentum got us and we found it really hard to turn it around," Moore said after full time.

"We have spoken a fair bit about turning it around when we are under the pump and the momentum is going against us, and we've tried to come up with ways to switch it back in our favour.

"I thought we did that pretty well today with an inexperienced team out there, so to finish off the game when we were under the pump was really good."

Moore said that next week's trial match against the St George Illawarra Dragons at WIN Stadium on Friday night would see a more first-string line-up take the field.

"The luxury we do have this year is plenty of depth and I think that picking the team on form for the first premiership game is something that we've discussed a lot as a coaching staff," Moore added.

"The players know that there's no-one going to get a position gifted to them, they're going to have to work for it this year."

In a first quarter punctuated by handling errors in the wet conditions, the Roosters crossed first despite a lack of ball with centre Willie Mataka doing the honours for a four-nil lead.

In a Bulldogs side littered with faces new and old, recruit Jonathan Wright made his first appearance in blue and white a memorable one with a free running try on quarter time. Bryson Goodwin's conversion sent the Bulldogs into the break ahead 6-4.

With the Bulldogs controlling the running, halfback Reynolds ensured they'd turn possession into points when he stepped beautifully off his right foot to score beneath the posts soon after the resumption of play. Again Goodwin converted to make it 12-4 at the break.

The third stanza saw the Roosters stage a revival, with quick tries to Jake Friend and Sam Perrett putting them back into the lead at 16-12.

Then a stroke of brilliance from Jack Littlejohn laid on a try for winger Justin Carney, with the five eighth's chip behind the line putting Carney away for a 22-12 score line at three quarter time.

With the Roosters dominating possession, the Bulldogs struggled to work the ball out of their own half in the early part of the final quarter,

However with second half skipper Ben Roberts at the helm, the Bulldogs struck with a Roberts kick finding Lafai, who streaked away to touch down on the left hand side of the field.

Goodwin's conversion got the deficit back to four points, at which point Reynolds chimed in again to score his second for the match and secure the Bulldogs the win.

The only dark cloud on the injury front for either team was what seems set to be a second major knee injury in as many seasons for Rooster Anthony Cherrington, who was stretchered from the field in the final quarter.

The Bulldogs continue their preparation for season 2011 with a trial hit out against the Dragons in Wollongong next Friday night.
