Eels Statement - Racial Slur

The Parramatta National Rugby League club has today expressed its extreme disappointment in the behavior of the patron responsible for a racial slur against Panthers captain Petero Civoniceva.

Eels officials have spent today interviewing witnesses and have also reviewed footage supplied by the Nine network. At this stage the patron responsible remains unidentified.

Eels Chief Executive Denis Fitzgerald said every attempt is being made to identify the culprit and once found that person would face not only a ban from Parramatta Stadium but also all NRL venues.

"We are disgusted with the behavior of one of our patrons in making derogatory comments towards Petero Civoniceva," Mr Fitzgerald said.

"At this time I'd like to commend the real Parramatta supporters who have come forward to help the club identify the person responsible.

"We have also been in contact with NSW Police who are very willing to assist us in locating those responsible.

"We are doing everything possible to identify the person and I would like to appeal to them to come forward voluntarily so that they can apologise directly to Petero.

"The Pirtek Parramatta Eels are a proudly multicultural club and it is unacceptable that our standing has been tarnished in this manner."

Lockyer set for return against Petero's Panthers

Brisbane has received the ideal New Years present with captain Darren Lockyer set to play in the opening round clash against Penrith on Sunday March 16.

Lockyer suffered a serious knee injury last year that required a reconstruction and put a huge hole in the Broncos premiership defence. Stand-in captain and now Panther Petero Civoniceva admitted that several of the Brisbane camp gave up following Lockyer's injury such is his importance to their cause.

Broncos Performance Director Jeremy Hickmans said, "He has been doing light running on his own in addition to rehab.

"He's on track for round one and he'll do most of the things required of the boys in camp."

Lockyer hasn't been in full training with the main squad and isn't expected to get a clearance to do full scale training until the end of January.

However, the news that Lockyer has been progressing well in his recovery will be of a huge bonus for the Broncos.

The opening round clash at Suncorp Stadium promises to be one that will gain plenty of interest with Lockyer's likely return and of course Civoniceva lining up on the other side of the field for the Panthers where he is favourite to takeover the captaincy from the departed Craig Gower.

Civoniceva's expected selection as Penrith captain will create a unique situation. Civoniceva's previous premiership game was as captain for the Broncos against Melbourne in week one of the Finals. His next game and Brisbane's next game will see Civoniceva as captain against the Broncos.
