Huddersfield new leaders as Wakefield lose four straight
Mon March 12, 2012
by Stobart Super League

Huddersfield Giants are the new leaders of Stobart Super League after condemning Wakefield Trinity Wildcats to a fourth successive defeat in a scrappy derby at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.

The Giants gained their fifth win of the season to leapfrog previous leaders Warrington Wolves while taking advantage of the shock defeat of Wigan Warriors at bottom club Widnes Vikings to top the table after six rounds.

Wakefield winger Ben Cockayne scored all three of his side's tries to lead a brief revival but Huddersfield started and finished strongly to deserve the points without playing anywhere near their best.

Winger Jermaine McGillvary gave the visitors a dream start with two tries in the first quarter and centre Joe Wardle touched down twice in the second half, while Wakefield were particularly well served by ex-Huddersfield trio Andy Raleigh, Danny Kirmond and Kyle Wood.

A mazy run by scrum-half Danny Brough, one of four ex-Wakefield players in the Giants line-up, created the position for centre Leroy Cudjoe to send McGillvary over for his first try while Cudjoe drew two defenders to get him over for his second.

Aaron Murphy looked to have finished off the best move of the match before being recalled for a forward pass and Wakefield took advantage of four consecutive penalties to pull a try back through Cockayne.

Huddersfield always looked the more likely to score and they duly extended their lead five minutes before half-time when stand-off Scott Grix got David Faiumu into a gap and prop Larne Patrick was on his side to take the final pass and touch down.

Brough's penalty on the stroke of half-time made it 18-4 but the Wildcats roared back early in the second half as the Giants paid the price for more indiscipline.

Cockayne twice took long passes from stand-off Isaac John to complete his hat-trick and, after failed conversion attempts by Cockayne and Tim Smith, John took the responsibility to kick his side's only goal of the game.

That made it 18-14 but Huddersfield made sure of the points when skipper Kevin Brown sent centre Wardle though a gap in the Wakefield defence after 61 minutes and then cut through for a try himself seven minutes later.

Brough scooped up a loose ball to set up the position for Wardle to grab his second try eight minutes from the end and, although Brough was off target for the third time, the Giants won with plenty to spare.

Hull KR part company with Ben Cockayne

Hull Kingston Rovers and utility player Ben Cockayne have parted company by mutual consent.

Cockayne has been suspended by the Super League club for the past fortnight pending investigations into an incident involving clubmate Liam Watts.

Rovers have met with Cockayne's agent David Howes and it has been decided that a clean break would be beneficial to both the club and the player.

Thus Cockayne is a free agent with immediate effect.

Mike Smith, Rovers CEO, said: "We would like to thank Ben for his contribution to the club over the last five years and wish him all the best in his future endeavours."

Howes explained: "It must be stressed that the Police are not taking any action against Ben with regard to the car chase as he was the passenger and thus an innocent party.

"The Police previously decided that the well documented Facebook episode also required no action.

"However, having received a final warning for the Facebook comments on diversity grounds and because of the negativity surrounding this latest incident, it is felt that Ben and the club will both benefit from a clean break.

"The Super League signing deadline passed last Friday, so Ben may seek a Championship contract for the rest of this season to maintain his fitness while talking to Super League clubs for the 2012 campaign onwards."

Cockayne added: "I would like to thank Hull KR, and particularly coach Justin Morgan, for giving me the opportunity to experience Rugby League at the highest level. Also my fellow players for their comradeship and support.

"I am extremely sad to be leaving the club that I have grown to love dearly. But I leave with many happy memories, none greater than the National League Grand Final victory which earned promotion to Super League, where Rovers belong.

"Many thanks to the faithful Robins fans who have stuck by me through some turbulent times. The Rovers supporters are the most passionate and loyal in Super League and, above everything else, they are what I will miss most."
