Source: www.thenational.com.pgFormer Maroons and Canberra Raiders forward Neville Costigan is set to don the coveted PNG Telikom Kumuls jumper in the Rugby League World Cup opener against England at the Dairy Farmers Stadium in Townsville, Australia, on Oct 25.
The St George-Illawara-bound back rower arrived yesterday afternoon and got straight into business, a training run in the company of the other 36 Kumuls aspirants at the Lloyd Robson Oval yesterday.
The Rabaul-born former Maroons hit-man will spearhead a host of stars in the PNG Internationals (Yellows) side including Makali Aizue, Stanley Gene and John Wilshere from Super League in Britain as well as NRL players' assault against the local talents from the SP Cup competition, making up the PNG Residents (Reds).
This is the second year running for the recently introduced one-off trial match, which has been set as an avenue to select the Kumuls for international commitments.
Costigan had previously declined to play for PNG when requested, sparking a public uproar.
But he has now had a change of heart and agreed to represent PNG.
Kumuls coach Adrian Lam maintains that Costigan is a world class player and PNG needs the services of players like him in the World Cup campaign against the superpowers of the game - Australia, New Zealand and England.
"I am a very big supporter of Costigan. He is obviously a world class player and has huge experience in big games like the State of Origin in the Maroons jersey and his contribution to the Kumuls World Cup campaign would be invaluable," Lam told The National last night.
Lam said that Costigan, a highly rated player in the NRL, was a huge boost to the PNG "Origin concept" and that it was his (Lam's) great chance to pick the best team to represent PNG.
Both Reds and the Yellows will train under Lam until tomorrow and the wrestle for the Kumuls jumper is set for Sunday at the Lloyd Robson Oval.
The 24-man Kumuls squad will be chosen from the match for the World Cup campaign in Australia in two weeks time.

Source: www.raiders.com.auCanberra Raiders trio Neville Costigan, Joel Monaghan and Scott Logan got their first look at the Rugby League World Cup on Wednesday afternoon at Canberra Stadium, when they were congratulated by ACT Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation Mr Andrew Barr for their selection for their respective nations.
Monaghan (Australia), Costigan (Papua New Guinea), and Logan (Scotland), have all been selected in their nations preliminary squads for the World Cup in October, with Logan set to play his opening match against France on his NRL home turf at Canberra Stadium.
Monaghan said it had been a great year for him so far after being selected in the Country and NSW teams at representative level, and said it would be a dream come true if he got to play for Australia.
"It's been a great year since returning home to Canberra, and I think its been good for my game to be back here at the Raiders," Monaghan said.
"If I get the chance to play for Australia it will top off a great year for me personally."
Costigan said he is looking forward to playing in the World Cup, and expects some tough matches when the tournament commences.
"At first I was going to give it a miss but after speaking to Coach Adrian Lam he made me see what a great honour it will be," Costigan said.
"We play Australia, New Zealand and England, so it will be a tough tournament for us but at the same time it's a great experience."
Logan will play in his second World Cup after an appearance at the 2000 tournament, and says the home ground advantage will be a good thing for him.
"It's my second World Cup which is something I'm really looking forward to," Logan said.
"Hopefully playing here in Canberra for the Raiders will see a few people follow the Scots for the game against France as well."
Mr Barr congratulated the trio on their inclusion in the team, and said it was great for the Raiders and Canberra to be recognised.
"It's great to see three Canberra Raiders players have won selection in provisional squads to participate in the Rugby League World Cup," Mr Barr said.
"Having three players selected in their respective national squads is fitting recognition for the outstanding season which the Canberra Raiders have had this year and I wish them well.
"The ACT Government has spent $28,000 to secure the World Cup game between France and Scotland at Canberra Stadium on October 26, as well as to host a welcome function for the two teams.
"It promises to be a fantastic match which will bring international media attention to Canberra. It is also a great opportunity for Canberra to see an international standard game so I encourage sports fans to get their tickets early."
