Covell leads the way as NRL Top Scorer after Round 24
Thu August 28, 2008
by Matthew O'Neill
Sharks winger Luke Covell leads the way as the NRL's leading point scorer with two rounds remaining whilst Brett Stewart and Denan Kemp are locked up as the leading try scorer.

Covell leads Luke Burt by 15 points in what shapes up as a two-horse race with Kurt Gidley and Cameron Smith both 28 points behind the Sharks winger. It's been a great effort by Covell with the Sharks not being a side noted for scoring many points and on top of that is unwanted for next year.

Fourteen players have passed the century this year from all different clubs. Only the Warriors (Michael Witt 92) Cowboys (John Williams 84 and Johnathan Thurston 82) haven't yet had players pass the 100 mark. Canberra's Terry Campese is just two points away from being the second Raider to reach the century.

Stewart and Kemp are locked up at 17 tries each with Greg Inglis and Shaun Kenny-Dowall two behind them in very close finish to the end.

Cameron Smith is the leading goal kicker with 66 and is two in front of Matt Orford with Burt and Covell also in striking distance from Smith. Chris Sandow is the most accurate kicker with 90% followed by Michael Gordon with 87%.

Ten players have landed drop goals this year with Sandow, Jarrod Mullen and Brett Kimmorley all landing three each.

Covell to undergo elbow surgery
Tue December 11, 2007
Source: www.sharks.com.au

Sharks winger Luke Covell, injured just five minutes into his international debut for New Zealand in October, will enter hospital to undergo elbow surgery.

It had been previously hoped that Covell could avoid surgery on his right elbow, however a second specialists opinion thought it best to have the injury corrected in a bid to prevent further problems down the track.

Covell, who had been back at training with the Sharks during the past couple of weeks, will enter hospital tomorrow (Wednesday).

The recovery period for Covell will be around four months, putting him in doubt for the opening rounds of the 2008 season.

After an outstanding 2007, Covell was selected to play for New Zealand, his father's country of berth, in the Trans Tasman Test in October and for the subsequent tour of France and the UK. However during the opening exchanges of the test against Australia, Covell dislocated the elbow, was forced from the field for the rest of the game and later deemed unfit to tour with the Kiwis.

With Covell his team's number one goal kicking option, coach Ricky Stuart will now be forced to find another kicker for the opening rounds, with the likes of Brett Seymour, Blake Green, Mitch Brown, Bryson Goodwin and Greg Bird all capable of carrying out the role, dependant on team selections.

At this stage of the Sharks pre-season preparations Covell appears to be the only player in doubt for the kick-off to 2008, with the remainder of the squad likely to be fit come March next year.
