There will be no fairytale ending to Ben Cross' cameo Wigan Warriors career after it was revealed he has broken his arm for a second time.
The 32-year-old Australian front rower, who joined the Warriors on a short-term contract in July after being released by Leeds Rhinos, broke his forearm on his fourth appearance against Salford City Reds in August.
That ruled him out of the Carnegie Challenge Cup final but he made a surprise return against St Helens in the opening play-off fixture 11 days ago and was in line to bow out with a possible Grand Final appearance.
However, he complained of soreness after the Saints game and x-rays have now indicated another stress fracture.
Cross is leaving Wigan at the end of the season, having signed a 12-month deal with Engage Super League new boys Widnes Vikings.
Wigan coach Michael Maguire said: "It is disappointing for Ben. He won't figure again for us."
Maguire expects centre Joel Tomkins to be available for Saturday's qualifying semi-final against St Helens at the Stobart Stadium after coming off against Catalan Dragons with a leg injury last Sunday.
Wigan also hope prop Lee Mossop will be fit to return after aggravating a hamstring injury in the warm-up on Sunday.

Former Leeds Rhinos prop Ben Cross could make an amazing comeback for Wigan Warriors in the Engage Super League play-offs after being out for just a month with a broken arm.
The 32-year-old Australian was a surprise short-term signing by the champions two months ago after he was released by the Rhinos, but he made only four appearances for them before breaking his forearm against Salford City Reds on August 14.
It ruled him out of the Carnegie Challenge Cup final at Wembley and was expected to sideline him for the rest of the season, but he had the plaster cast removed after a fortnight and has trained with the team throughout.
Wigan coach Michael Maguire says Cross, who is joining Super League new boys Widnes for next season, could even play against St Helens in Sunday's qualifying play-off at the DW Stadium.
"There is a chance," said Maguire. "Crossy has actually been training with us in the last couple of weeks with a guard on.
"He's starting to come good and the surgeons are all saying the right things so hopefully we might have a player on our hands there when it comes to selection time.
"At first we thought he was going to be out for the rest of the season but the surgeon has done a great job and the medical staff have been working extremely hard.
"He's been training the whole way through. He's a pro and looks after himself and does the right things."
Cross played in the Challenge Cup semi-final win over St Helens and, with Gareth Hock ruled out of the play-offs through suspension, Maguire admits it would be tempting to throw the veteran front rower into the action.
"To have someone of Ben's experience around is definitely going to help us," he said. "He's been through final series with Melbourne and played in many big games."
St Helens coach Royce Simmons says he expects to have Leon Pryce, James Roby, Francis Meli, Sia Soliola and Jamie Foster all back to face Wigan after sitting out Saturday's win over Harlequins RL.
