Cusack signs new deal with Hull FC
Thu June 18, 2009
Source: www.hullfc.com

Hull FC have confirmed that Australian prop Peter Cusack has signed a one-year contract extension at the club.

Cusack, who was out of contract at the end of this season, has agreed a new deal keeping him at the KC Stadium until the end of 2010.

The former Sydney Roosters and South Sydney star joined the Black and Whites in 2008 after impressing down under.

He made a total of 168 first grade appearances in the NRL and twice featured for New South Wales.

During his time with the Roosters he played in four Grand Finals as well as being part of the team that thrashed St Helens in the World Club Challenge at the Reebok Stadium in 2003.

78 appearances followed with South Sydney before heading to Super League and making 25 appearances in his opening season with the Airlie Birds.

He has since been made Vice-captain at the club alongside Chris Thorman and was a permanent fixture in the team this season until he dislocated his wrist against the Warrington Wolves, forcing him to have reconstruction surgery.

Cusack, or The Yak as he is known to his team-mates said, "I'm really happy and excited about the new deal and I am already looking forward to next year.

"Being injured at the moment is frustrating and for me it feels a bit like unfinished business. I would have hated to leave in this position and now I feel I have a chance to make my mark, play well and contribute to this side playing well."

He added, "We have some great new players on the way, Sean Long will be impressive and Craig Fitzgibbon is a good friend of mine, so playing with him over here will be great, it is something I wanted to be part of.

Hull FC Head Coach Richard Agar said, "Pete is a good bloke and a terrific professional, he trains very hard and has a great influence on the other players. He has been a club captain and is our vice-captain and he sets good standards within our club."

"I think we will see his leadership and influence come to the fore next year and he will have a big role to play next season. He has played in winning teams throughout his career, he can see the potential we have here to do that and it is something he wants to be part of."

Hull FC Chief Executive James Rule added, "Pete has been a consistent performer whenever he has pulled on a shirt for us. His leadership qualities are invaluable both on and off the field of play and I am delighted that we have agreed this new deal."

Sharp said: "Peter is tremendously experience and he has already shown good leadership qualities on the training pitch and in the gym.

"He has respect and will offer us just what we're looking for on the field, and he also gets in a lot of game time during matches."

The 31-year-old, who appeared in four NRL Grand Finals with Sydney City Roosters, said: "It is an honour, especially for a new club.

"But what is important is that we play to our game plan and do the things we have done in training.

"If we do that then we put ourselves in with a chance."

Meanwhile, Australia Test star Shaun Berrigan has been given the all clear to make his engage Super League debut for Hull FC against Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday (7-30pm).

Close season signing Berrigan injured his shoulder in prop Paul King's Testimonial against Super League rivals Huddersfield Giants on January 13th.

Berrigan will be joined by two of Hull's other close season recruits, Australian duo prop Peter Cusack and utility back Todd Byrne.

Although missing some key players, coach Peter Sharp is still very much upbeat and said: "We are happy with our squad and we'll be going to Warrington to play very hard and hopefully get a result."
