QCup Rd 3 Sunshine Coast 6 Tweed Heads 7

Tweed Heads Seagulls registered their first win for the season on Saturday, outlasting the Sea Eagles 7-6 in their game at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

It was a tough outing for both sides and they struggled to break through the opposition line.

Scores were locked at 0-0 at the halftime break, and both teams would have hoped for a more positive start to the second half.

Scoring again proved difficult, despite the attacking arsenal on display in both sides. Tweed Heads were without the try-scoring nous of Kevin Gordon who was called up to the Gold Coast Titans NRL side after his lengthy absence.

The Sunshine Coast finally broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when Dale Middleton crossed for the home side. He then added the extras with his conversion to give his side a hard-fought 6-0 lead.

It was short-lived however, with big forward Michael Henderson scoring the first try for Tweed Heads just over 10 minutes later; and Beau Henry's conversion saw the sides again on level pegging.

As they did for much of last season that saw them claim the minor premiership - the gritty Seagulls managed to remain in the game.

They did it again on Saturday; with the field goal from Brad Davis in the closing stages proving to be just enough to see them sing the team song for the first time this season.

Despite the loss, the Sunshine Coast are sure to take plenty of positives from the game with the young side able to defend well enough to keep their opposition to the one try.

Next week, the Sea Eagles will face the tough ask of attempting to stop the early surge of the Redcliffe Dolphins, while Tweed Heads will again hit the road for a showdown with the Mackay Cutters who are also coming off a win.

TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS 7 (Michael Henderson try; Beau Henry goal; Brad Davis field goal) def SUNSHINE COAST SEA EAGLES 6 (Dale Middleton try; Dale Middleton goal) at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Terrific Tweed Punishes Devils
Mon May 18, 2009

BRAD Davis is back - and so are the Tweed Heads Seagulls.

The premiership-winning five-eighth returned from injury today as the Seagulls breathed some much needed life into their 2009 campaign with a 38-10 victory over the Norths Devils at Cudgen.

Davis guided his young side around the park in a polished performance that couldn't have come at a better time for the Seagulls.

Tweed entered the match with just three wins from their opening nine games, but such is the tight nature of this year's Queensland Cup, today's crucial victory has the Seagulls within two points of sixth spot.

Tweed piled on 26 unanswered points in the second half to topple the Devils.

Cameron White (2), Ben Jeffery, David Mead, James Wood, Tim Maccan and Cody Nelson went on the try-scoring sheet for the Seagulls, who led 12-10 at half-time.

Norths coach Kevin Carmichael said his team paid a high price for a string of basic errors in the second half.

The Devils' normally slick attack was also virtually non-existent.

"We were pretty ordinary with the ball to be honest," Carmichael conceded.

"Our fifth tackle options were pretty ordinary too."

Carmichael said most of the damage was done in a 15 minute period in the second half when the Devils had "hardly any footy".

However, the Devils coach conceded the Seagulls were too good on the day.

Carmichael said Davis' surprise return made a "big difference" to the Tweed.

"His kicking game was very solid and he controlled the game well," Carmichael said.

"He got a good 40/20 there at one stage that put us under pressure."

Norths will get a chance to atone for the loss when they host the Ipswich Jets at Bishop Park next Sunday.

The Tweed travels to Mackay to take on the Cutters.

TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS 38 (Cameron White 2, Ben Jeffery, David Mead, James Wood, Tim Maccan, Cody Nelson tries; Ben Jeffery 5 goals) def NORTHS DEVILS 10 (Ben Hurrell, Gideon Mzembe tries; Ryan Hansen goal) at Cudgen Oval.
