Dobson inspires Hull KR to victory

Huddersfield Giants suffered just their second defeat of the Stobart Super League season as they were outplayed by Hull KR at Craven Park.

Michael Dobson inspired Rovers' success with five assists and six goals as a run of 24 unanswered points underlined Rovers' dominance after they fell 18-6 behind.

The Giants had taken a grip on the game with converted tries from Luke George, Scott Grix and Greg Eden in the opening 18 minutes.

Liam Watts replied for Rovers before they reeled off four tries either side of half-time. David Hodgson got the ball rolling on 35 minutes before Kris Welham, Josh Hodgson and Scott Taylor crashed over in a match-winning burst.

Huddersfield opened the scoring in the fourth minute through George's 10th try of a productive season.

The winger left Lincoln Withers in his wake as he touched down, Danny Brough adding a difficult touchline conversion.

Eden and David Hodgson played pivotal roles in getting Rovers level. The former gathered Dobson's high bomb and, in his attempt to avoid conceding a goal line drop out, the latter forced the ball loose for Watts to pounce for an easy score.

George, though, orchestrated Huddersfield's second try soon after; he found Grix, who crossed at the corner - Brough looking assured in again adding the extras.

The visitors then capitalised on sloppy defending in the 18th minute when Eden got the better of Graeme Horne to cross, Brough once more making no mistake.

But Rovers showed plenty of resilience and, from a penalty won by Welham, Dobson sent a long cut-out pass for returning winger David Hodgson to score against his former club.

Dobson's conversion sailed through the uprights and two minutes before the interval, Rovers were level.

Another fine pass from Dobson created confusion in the Giants defence for Welham to score. Dobson's trusty left boot sent the sides in level at 18-18.

Momentum remained with Rovers at the start of the second half and they went ahead for the first time when Dobson's pass on the blind side sent Josh Hodgson over for his fifth try of the season. Dobson added the extras for a 24-18 lead.

The hosts were determined to extend their lead and did so in the 55th minute when Dobson's fourth assist sent Taylor over for a try his performance deserved.

Huddersfield responded as Shaun Lunt strolled through some poor tackling by Welham and David Hodgson. Brough's conversion rebounded off the upright to leave eight points between the sides at 30-22.

The home side, though, sealed the win as Con Mika's brilliant pass sent Sam Latus away for the decisive score, after which Mickey Paea took Dobson's fifth assist over, allowing Dobson to add his sixth goal.

Hull KR confirm that Michael Dobson has picked up a shoulder injury but the news is positive in that he's only expected to be missing for the next month.

Being without the influential scrum-half is a blow for the Robins, but Head Coach Craig Sandercock is happy that Dobson will be back in the fold relatively quickly.

"Michael suffered an injury to his shoulder during the game at Wakefield last weekend and was removed from the field as a precautionary measure," he said.

"His injury requires nothing more than conservative management though and it looks likely that he'll only miss the next month of football which is positive news for us. Being without Michael makes life tough for us, especially with the other injuries that we have, but I've always said that these kind of problems present opportunities for others and we'll just get on with the job."
