Rhino Donald set to retire
Thu August 19, 2010
Source: www.therhinos.co.uk

Leeds Rhinos winger Scott Donald has announced he will retire at the end of the 2010 season to enable him to return home to Australia to pursue a career outside of rugby in his native Queensland.

Donald joined the Rhinos in 2006 and has gone on to score 90 tries in 142 starts for the club, including one in the win at Castleford last Friday.

The former Parramatta and North Queensland winger originally signed a one year extension to cover next season earlier this year but the opportunity for a career after rugby has been decisive in the 30-year-old's decision to return home to Australia.

He commented, "The discussions have only come about in the last few weeks. A work opportunity has become available for me back home in Australia, which is outside of rugby. It is something that I have had to think long and hard about but I also have to consider my young family. My son is just about to start school and they have had to sacrifice a lot to help me with my rugby career here at the Rhinos and it is time that I looked at other options back home.

"At the time, I signed my new contract, I was fully committed to the club but things have moved quickly in the last few weeks and I need to make sure that I take the options that are available to me at present because you never know whether they will be there in the future," added Donald.

The winger has also revealed that the current strength of the Rhinos and the talent that continues to emerge from the club's Academy made his decision an easier one. He added, "The position that the team is in at present was also a big factor for me. I would hate to leave the Rhinos in the lurch if we were struggling and I thought I needed to help the club out. However, on the contrary, we have got great strength in depth and I know the club will just go on to get stronger and stronger in the years ahead.

"It is also exciting to see the young lads emerging from the Academy system. Having seen lads like Ryan Hall, Luke Burgess and Kallum Watkins come through in my time here, you can see that the club has quality throughout the system. With the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final and the chance to win a fourth title in a row still to come, I felt this was the right time to retire," added Donald.

Donald joined the Rhinos from Manly Sea Eagles back in 2006 and has been one of the Champions most consistent performers in recent years, setting a record in 2008 after 92 consecutive appearances in the starting line up. He was included in the Super League Dream Team on two occasions in 2007 and 2008 and memorably scored crucial tries in the 2007 Grand Final win over St Helens and the 2008 World Club Challenge victory over Melbourne Storm at Elland Road.

Donald says that he will always look back fondly on his time at Headingley Carnegie, he added, "I have played 13 years as a professional both in Australia and here in England with the Rhinos. Leeds is the club that I have spent the longest at, with this being my fifth season at Headingley Carnegie, and three Grand Finals so far is a great achievement and something that I know I will look back on with a great deal of pride when I reflect on my Rugby League career.

"My time at the Rhinos will be at the top of the list when I think of the highlights of my career and I just hope I can help the team to finish my time at the club on a high in the coming months," added Donald.

Commenting on the announcement Leeds Rhinos Head Coach Brian McClennan said, "Having spoken to Scott over the past few weeks we fully understand his reasons for wanting to return home and make the most of any opportunity for a career after rugby. Scott has been an outstanding servant for Leeds Rhinos throughout his time at the club, looking after himself as an excellent professional which is demonstrated by his incredible record of fitness over the past four years.

"Scott and his family will return home to Australia with our best wishes at the end of the season and our deep gratitude however before then we have some important games which Scott will want to play a crucial role in."

Leeds re-sign Buderus and six other key players

Engage Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos have received a major boost ahead of their massive clash with rivals St Helens this Saturday at Headingley Carnegie with the news that all their out of contract players have agreed extensions for next season.

Keith Senior, Kylie Leuluai, Scott Donald, Matt Diskin, Danny Buderus, Ali Lauitiiti and Ryan Bailey were all due out of contract at the end of the current campaign but have now put pen to paper on new deals.

Commenting on the announcement Chief Executive Gary Hetherington said, "We appreciate that it is probably an unusual step to announce all seven players at once however we are keen to stop any speculation regarding the squad for the remainder of the season and looking ahead to 2011.

"Our policy is always to review the squad at the end of each season, which is what we have done for a number of years regardless of the success or failure of the previous campaign. We will continue with this policy but safe in the knowledge that our own world class talent is contracted to us for next season.

"In the current global market place and with more and more clubs spending to the full salary cap limit, the challenge of attracting and signing world class players is becoming tougher and tougher. Therefore, it makes sense to secure the very best players before looking elsewhere.

"We managed to re-sign Lee Smith earlier this season which was a major signing for the club but one that we could not have foreseen at the start of this season. Having also brought in Brett Delaney and Greg Eastwood at the start of the current season we are looking forward to having a consistent group of players for the next 18 months," added Hetherington.

The news follows the recent announcement that Brian McClennan has agreed a new one year extension at the club and means that the Rhinos will head into the business end of the season without any distraction.

Commenting on the news McClennan said, "I am delighted that everyone has agreed contract extensions. Our captain Kevin Sinfield has spoken publicly about what a special group of players we have here and I think this once again perfectly demonstrates this.

"We have had some tough times this season but that has only served to bring this group even closer together and everyone is determined to do as well as we can in both the Carnegie Challenge Cup and the end of season play offs. We were pleased with our win at Warrington last Sunday and we are very much looking forward to the challenge of taking on St Helens this Saturday back at Headingley Carnegie."
