Dorn hat-tricks Quins stun Leeds in massive upset

Luke Dorn grabbed a hat-trick as Harlequins RL inflicted a shock defeat on Leeds a week away from the Rhinos' Carnegie Challenge Cup Final date with Wigan Warriors.

Quins, who had won just once in their last 19 matches, dominated throughout as Leeds coach Brian McDermott endured a dreadful first return to the club he coached for four years.

McDermott left out key forwards Jamie Peacock, Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Ryan Bailey and the Rhinos were lightweight throughout as the struggling Quins claimed a famous double following their 36-26 win at Headingley in February.

The sides came into the contest in contrasting form, Leeds having won their last five encounters to raise hopes of a top-four finish, while the Quins had lost six on the spin.

Despite the woeful form of Rob Powell's men it was the hosts who began the brighter, and took a deserved lead in the 12th minute.

Smart work by Chad Randall 10 yards out saw him dart through the Leeds rearguard, before offloading to Dorn who touched down in the right-hand corner.

Leeds appeared to have one eye on next weekend's showpiece and less than five minutes later they fell further behind.

Chris Bailey offloaded to Dorn, who gratefully accepted before charging through unopposed to touchdown under the posts.

Luke Gale had added the extras on both occasions, and further extended the hosts' lead just before the half-hour with a penalty.

Leeds' woes increased six minutes from the break when skipper Kevin Sinfield was sin-binned for a professional foul as Quins piled on the pressure.

And Leeds' nightmare half was compounded moments later when the ball was quickly spread across the line and, taking advantage of the extra man, Rob Purdham teed up Jamie O'Callaghan to score in the left-hand corner for a 20-0 lead at the break.

When Dorn completed his treble with his 15th try of the season five minutes after the break ? again under the posts and with Gale again adding the extras - the points were in the bag.

Ryan Hall finally got the Rhinos on the board in the 53rd minute when he benefitted from good work by Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow to go over in the corner to make it 26-4.

Dorn then impressed in defence as he put former Quins loanee Ben Jones-Bishop in touch with the try line in sight as Leeds sniffed a comeback.

But former Manly stand-off Dorn was at it again in attack when he linked up with Luke Gale to send over former Rhinos winger Mark Calderwood 15 minutes from time for the clinching score.

Gale's sixth goal made it 32-4 and to make matters worse for the woeful visitors, exciting centre Kallum Watkins limped off with a leg problem.

Seven minutes from time McGuire crashed over and Sinfield's first conversion put Leeds into double figures.

And they finished with a flourish as Burrow danced past Calderwood and Jay Pitts crashed over, but it was too little too late.

Dorn the hero as Quins maintain unbeaten start

Luke Dorn was the Harlequins RL hero with two tries as the Londoners maintained their unbeaten start to the Engage Super League season with a hard-fought win over Crusaders RL.

Dorn struck in each half to push Quins to victory in a match that was in the balance right up to the final hooter.

With persistent rain and a pitch that was cutting up badly after the Quins' union side had played on it just 24 hours earlier, a try bonanza never really looked on the cards.

So it proved in the opening 10 minutes, with defence well on top for both sides.

Having soaked up the bulk of the early pressure, the visitors took the lead after 12 minutes, Jarrod Sammut squirming out of a tackle to touch down.

The hosts continued to push and, despite more excellent defence from the Welsh side, Quins finally broke through midway through the half, Luke Gale twisting and turning to score after Chris Bailey had made good ground.

The Londoners moved into the lead soon after, Dorn scrambling over the line after being released by Gale's neat grubber.

It was the home side who were in the ascendancy, but both sides were showing last weekend's opening victories were no fluke.

Crusaders were improving as the half wore on, and only great defensive work from Jamie O'Callaghan stopped Rhys Williams getting over in the corner.

But that effort was to prove mere respite, as Sammut crossed for his second score after 35 minutes, ghosting over after the Welsh side stretched the home defence.

It was proving a real nip-and-tuck affair, with the hosts nudging ahead again right on half-time as Gale kicked a close-range penalty.

The cagey opening first period was soon forgotten at the start of the second half as Quins opened an eight-point lead with a move of real quality.

David Howell released winger Chris Melling and after he streaked down the wing, Dorn was on hand to race under the posts.

Despite the conditions worsening, there was no let up in the effort from either side, although the muddy pitch was certainly having an effect on the attacking impetus, with Howell spilling the ball as Quins created an overlap ten minutes into the half.

The hosts certainly seemed to be taking control, but, when Oliver Wilkes coughed up the ball close to his own line, Crusaders were gifted a way back into the game, Ben Flower driving over to cut the deficit.

Things were back in the balance, and suddenly it was Harlequins on the back foot as Sammut continued to probe.

Both sides were visibly tiring but the effort was very much still there, with the emphasis now on playing for territory and trying to force a mistake.

Crusaders came desperately close to snatching it at the death when Ryan O'Hara broke clear, but his pass went to ground and the chance was gone.
