Source: www.crusadersrfl.comCeltic Crusaders are delighted to have raised over 1,600 for Cardiff-based cancer charity Tenvous during July.
The bulk of the money was raised by Crusaders' full-back Tony Duggan on July 4th, when he walked from Bridgend Designer Outlet to the Brewery Field on crutches. The injured star is now wearing a medical boot and is hoping to be back in action in September.
Sponsorship for this reached over 900 before the day with a further 450 being donated via a bucket collection conducted by Duggan as he did a lap of honour around the ground before the Celtic Crusaders v Warrington Wolves game.
Duggan said: "When I knew I was going to be out for some time with my ankle injury I wanted to do something challenging for charity. We had started to build up a good relationship with Tenovus and a sponsored walk on crutches seemed to be a good thing to do. I'd like to thank David Tangata Toa for walking with me. Also thanks to Ian Lovell, Sky Sports, BBC and ITV for covering it, Bridgend Designer Outlet for hosting the start and of course everyone who donated."
In addition, a Crusaders' Fans Day at the Brewery Field, organised by Damien Quinn, who holds the club record for most appearances and most points scored, raised an additional 300.
The event took place at the Brewery Field last Sunday 19th July. Crusaders players and staff took took on the fans side, the Celtic Barbarians, in a tag rugby game and won seven tries to two. Fans then had the opportunity to have their photo taken in the centre of a team photograph holding the ball, there were also autograph opportunities before the barbeque that was cooked by former Crusaders Team Manager Gerald McCarthy.
Donations were also given on the day from supporter Rob Mackie, who sold a signed ball on eBay for the cause, plus the Tydfil Wildcats, who played their first ever open age game last week against a WRL Development Staff side for the charity.
Quinn said: "Last Sunday was a fantastic event. I'd like to thank Gerald McCarthy for volunteering to be the chef, Booker Cash and Carry for donating the food, to the Crusaders players and staff who gave up their time and to all the fans who turned up to make it such an enjoyable day."
McCarthy, now working directly for the Brewery Field Stadium was happy to be involved in another Crusaders event.
"The weather did not put off the supporters and players turning up for high quality cuisine and top quality tag rugby," he said. "It was great to see so many familiar faces all contributing their time and money to such a worthwhile cause."
Richard Pugh from Tenovus said: "The support we have received from the Crusaders staff, players and supporters has been brilliant over the last couple of months, the funding they have raised will make a huge impact on the lives of people who have been affected by cancer and there families. We at Tenovus have been hugely impressed at the Crusaders focus on helping the communities of Wales. A big thank you to Tony Duggan for his extraordinary efforts in completing his walk on crutches and another big thank you to Damien Quinn for organising the fans day."
The Crusaders' next home game is this Saturday when they take on Bradford Bulls at the Brewery Field. Kick-off is 6pm and admission is from just 4 for juniors and 14 for adults.

Source: www.crusadersrfl.comCeltic Crusaders have started planning their playing squad for the 2010 season by announcing that two long serving players will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Full back Tony Duggan, 30, who made his Crusaders debut against Hemel Stags in the Northern Rail Cup in 2006, is out of contract at the end of the year and is expected to continue his Rugby League career in France form next season.
Another player, 28 year old stand-off Damian Quinn, who also made his debut in Crusaders' first ever game against Hemel Stags in 2006 is out of contract at the end of the year and is expected to join Duggan in France.
Leighton Samuel, Celtic Crusaders chairman said: "We are currently looking at shaking up the playing squad for next year as we look to improve both our performances and results. It's fair to say that our playing squad for 2010 will look significantly different to the one that has represented the club in its inaugural Super League season and the planning for next year starts right now.
"I'd like to put on record my thanks to both Tony and Damian who have been with Crusaders since 2006 when the club played its first ever game against Hemel Stags. It was only right and proper that players who helped this club reach the top flight were rewarded with the opportunity to play in Super League.
"Tony and Damian won't be the only two players to leave between now and the start of next season as we need to free up space in the squad so that we can add more players with Super League experience to our playing roster."
In addition to planning its playing squad for 2010, Celtic Crusaders are also weighing up their options about where they will play next year.
Leighton Samuel added: "We're currently considering a move away from the Brewery Field and Bridgend until our new ground is built. We play the champions Leeds Rhinos in late August in Newport, and who knows, if that is a success we might make that move semi-permanent at least until our new home is ready."
