Canterbury Coach Kevin Moore last week against Canberra made the big decision to move Jamal Idris into the forwards with the move reaping immediate dividends.
The move into the forwards for Idris was always going to be inevitable as it was for Ruben Wiki throughout his outstanding career with the Raiders, Warriors and Kiwis.
The Bulldogs have been hammered from pillar to post up the middle this season, but the move of Idris into the pack along with the mid-season signing of Ryan Tandy has given the Canterbury pack the necessary punch and aggression it has desperately needed.
Idris has been criticised for his defence, but his only problem in defence has been his lack of ability to read the defence, not actually tackling or hitting his opponent. Last year Idris had the benefit of playing inside the great Hazem El Masri, who was one of the best readers in defence and guided Idris brilliantly in helping him read the oppositions attack. Idris this year hasn't had the luxury of playing inside a class player and it has showed dramatically on the Bulldogs right side defence.
The move of Idris into the forwards has been rushed due to the dearth of impact in the Bulldogs back-row and compounded by the problems the Bulldogs are facing on the right hand side in defence.
Shane Neumann has come into the Bulldogs side at right centre and he has given the side some extra pace and also assurance on the right hand edge in defence where he's a good reader of the oppositions attack.
Centre is one of the hardest positions on the field to defence and it's more important to be a good reader in defence as it is to be a good tackler, which Idris was the latter and not the former whilst El Masri was a master of reading the defence whereas Steve Turner is simply no-where near El Masri's class of a footballer.
When Idris was selected on the bench in the opening State of Origin match, I was personally hoping to see NSW Coach Craig Bellamy throw Idris into the forwards to see how he'll handle it as all along I have viewed Idris this season as a back-rower stuck out in the centres. A predictable injury to the over-rated Matt Cooper meant that Idris was thrust into the game in the centres for the entire second half.
Idris performed encouragingly in his Origin debut, but in time honoured tradition by the NSW selectors he was dropped for game two as they searched for a 'defensive' player in the hope to contain Greg Inglis, which back fired on Laurie Daley, Bob McCarthy and the rest of the NSW selectors.
Moore for too long this season sat back, made the wrong changes and stuck by the wrong player's n the hope of finding the magic switch to turn the season around. Moving Idris to the forwards Moore clicked on right switch in a way of generating enthusiasm to the Bulldogs side.
With Tandy and Idris up the middle early on all the sudden the Bulldogs forwards were punching easy metres up the middle and putting Canterbury on the front foot early on in matches. For too long this year the Bulldogs have lacked energy and enthusiasm from the outset. The last two weeks has also seen a dramatic improvement in the efforts of Ben Hannant, which remains to be seen how long it will last for though.
Idris must remain in the second-row for the remainder of his career as his style of attack and defence suits wearing the No.11 jersey. Idris will go past all his potential in the second-row and leave his mark as one of Canterbury's finest second-rowers following in the traditions of Bob McCarthy, Graeme Hughes, Steve Folkes, David Gillespie, Darren Smith, Simon Gillies, Willie Mason and Sonny Bill Williams as one of the best Canterbury have had in the second-row.
The luxury of keeping Idris in the centres can no longer be afforded with the forward pack lacking mongrel and El Masri no longer there to guide Idris on the field. He must now continue to be set free up the middle.
Moore proved he's as cunning as his late father when he decided not to name Ben Barba in the Bulldogs top 17 on the same day as Israel Folau signed with the AFL. The decision to officially drop Barba after omitting him at the last minute a few days before certainly deserved to attract more news, but the Folau news swamped all other stories in the game.
Barba has been the Bulldogs best and most enthusiastic player this season. Whenever Barba was introduced into the match all the sudden Canterbury looked dangerous and upbeat with their opponents.
The decision to drop Barba due to "match fitness" raised a few eye-brows when players lacking in fitness and stamina were retained in the side. At the time he was the club's equal leading try-scorer and since he's returned he's now the outright leading try-scorer with 12 ahead of Josh Morris with 10.
Barba proved in 25 minutes against the Gold Coast three weeks ago that he had to be on the field from the outset.
When the late Peter Moore in his role as Chief Executive quizzed Phil Gould in 1988 when he was Canterbury Coach as to why Steve Mortimer was only being used for the last 30 minutes Gould replied that Mortimer was no longer an 80 minute player and he had to use him in a shorter period. Bullfrog's response to Gould was that Mortimer should then be playing the opening 30 minutes.
With Tandy and Idris providing the punch up the middle and Barba being out there from the start it has allowed the Bulldogs to attack from the front foot and Barba has been the forefront of the Bulldogs early attacking raids.
Canterbury has changed their attacking structure in recent weeks that has allowed Barba to become more dominant in the game. Stats revealed on the weekend showed that Barba averages a try every 45 minutes this season compared to the leading try-scorer in the NRL with a try every 75 minutes.
Quite simply a spot for 80 minutes has to be found for Barba and the Bulldogs coaching staff must allow for inexperience mistakes to come from Barba as he's going to win a lot more games than he'll lose for the Bulldogs.
Josh Dugan and Nathan Gardner along with Lachlan Coote are the three most exciting young fullbacks in the NRL and Barba has made a complete goose in successive weeks of Dugan and Gardner. Barba is a rare talent that must be enhanced and encouraged. He is a player that scores points and creates points.
Barba is already the 9th highest try-scorer in all grades for the Bulldogs passing Steve Gearin on the weekend with his double.
There are still a lot of problem areas for the Bulldogs that have to be addressed. When Moore takes off Tandy and Idris and brings on Michael Hodgson and Gary Warburton the intensity levels drop dramatically and it was so noticeable against Canberra a week ago and to a lesser extent last Saturday against Cronulla.
Moore needs to find four reserves with impact whilst at the same time keeping Barba, Idris and Tandy in the starting side in the positions they have played in the last two weeks. The ideal four players on the interchange would be Mickey Paea, Tim Browne, Dene Halatau and Ben Roberts (when he returns from injury). Blake Green would be the best player suited on the bench until Roberts returns. It sadly appears that the dynamic and tenacious Joel Romelo is on the outer at Canterbury and he would have been the ideal impact player to use off the bench.
Hodgson has been an honest toiler throughout his career, but age and time have got the better of him as an NRL player on a weekly basis whilst Warburton is no-where near the standard to play NRL and lacks penetration in attack, next to no passing or off-loading ability and his defence lacks impact required to be effective in the NRL.
If the Bulldogs want to mount a challenge for the finals Moore needs to persist with Barba, Idris and Tandy where they've been playing for the last two weeks and find the right balance on the interchange bench to take the lead when the likes of Tandy, Idris and Hannant are given a spell.
Moore has had a very challenging second season as Coach, but he needs to continue to think outside the square if the Bulldogs are to finish the season on a positive note.
