Fa'alogo stars in Giants win
Mon April 19, 2010
Source: www.therfl.co.uk

New Zealand international David Fa'alogo marked his Carnegie Challenge Cup debut with a brace of tries as Huddersfield produced an accomplished performance to reach the last 16 with a 40-12 victory over Hull KR.

The strong-running former South Sydney forward typified the Giants' forward dominance as last year's beaten finalists coasted to a seven-try victory in an entertaining fourth-round tie at the Galpharm Stadium. Hull KR had no answer to Huddersfield's potent mixture of brawn and brain, much to the disappointment of their 3,000-strong army of fans among the 7,241 crowd.

The warning signals were there for Rovers in the first 10 minutes when Jamahl Lolesi and the hugely impressive Kevin Brown both crossed the tryline only to be denied for infringements. The visitors bombed a glorious opportunity to take the lead when prop Joel Clinton, their best player in the first half, failed to take Ben Galea's bullet-like pass as he charged for the line and they never got another look-in before half-time. Lolesi opened the scoring after 15 minutes by finishing off a move fashioned on the training field, with winger Leroy Cudjoe palming Brown's kick back into his centre's grateful arms.

Huddersfield found holes down the middle but were equally dangerous when they used the width of the pitch and smart passing along the line on the last tackle enabled second rower Fa'alogo to score his first try. But it was Brown, who is in arguably the best form of his career, who caused most of the problems for the hard-pressed Hull KR defence and his sublime touches enabled the Giants to put the tie beyond their visitors before the break. His inside pass got substitute David Faiumu through a gap and hooker Luke Robinson was in support to touch down while a cut-out pass got winger David Hodgson over unopposed at the corner. With skipper Brett Hodgson converting three of the tries, Huddersfield were comfortably placed at 22-0 and it was no surprise that they were unable to maintain their high standards in the second half.

Rovers pulled a try back after 56 minutes when centre Jake Webster took Clint Newton's one-handed overhead pass and Michael Dobson added the touchline conversion. But the score did nothing to weaken Huddersfield's stranglehold and scrum-half Danny Brough added a fifth try after 65 minutes, intercepting Galea's pass and sprinting 70 metres to the line. Rovers managed further consolation when full-back Shaun Briscoe took advantage of hesitancy from Brown to touch down Scott Murrell's grubber kick inches from the dead-ball line but they finished a well beaten side. And the Giants finished with a purple patch, Fa'alogo powering through for his second try and loose forward Martin Aspinwall also crossing the whitewash, with Brett Hodgson taking his goal tally to six from seven attempts.

Fa'alogo arrives at Huddersfield

New Zealand World Cup winner David Fa'alogo jetted into England this week to take up his three-year contract with engage Super League Club of the Year, Huddersfield Giants.

The second row international forward met his teammates for the first time on Friday and is delighted to have arrived:

"This is obviously a massive move for my family and me and we're really excited about it. Although we've never visited England before, playing in Super League has always been a goal of mine and it's something my wife and myself spoke about when I was playing in the Australian NRL.

"I've always fancied testing myself here, whilst experiencing a totally different culture at the same time, and this seemed the ideal time to make that move."

"From what I've seen from watching Super League, it does look a very exciting brand of footy. I'm sure it'll take me a little while to get used to it, but I definitely believe I've got the game to adapt to it."

And the powerhouse forward is looking to benefit the Giants squad both on and off the field.

"I can bring some aggression and power into the pack but also some experience for the younger players who are coming through the ranks."

After undergoing minor knee and ankle operations, Fa'alogo will be in rehab for the first part of off-season training but is looking forward to getting started:

"I am in rehab at the moment but I can't wait to get back into training and making sure I am 100% fit for the start of the season."

The 29 year old knows several players from the club's New Zealand International contingent and admits that Nathan Brown was key to him becoming a Giant:

"Nathan being the coach was a very big factor in deciding to come to Huddersfield. He did a good job at St George in the NRL, and is doing a great job at the Giants. He's clearly got a great future ahead of him, and it's going to be a fantastic experience learning off him.

"I know some of the Kiwi boys through the International games and I'm excited about meeting the rest of the players as well."
