Faiumu: Focus is the key
Fri March 16, 2012
Source: www.giantsrl.com

Huddersfield Giants star David Faiumu believes the current crop of players are some of the best he's seen at the club and feels they can help the club make the step to the next level.

"Potentially it's a very strong squad. We've got some good youngsters coming through and they mix well with the old heads who steer the ship."

"There is no room for complacency in this team with the youngsters coming in and making their mark. They're all putting in big efforts and they are playing some good rugby, but as an older player in the team it pushes you even harder."

The Claret and Gold replaced Warrington at the top of the Super League after the victory over Wakefield, but 'Fuey' says it's not something which is talked about.

"Browny hasn't even spoke about it to be honest and will make sure we keep our feet on the ground. It's about consistency at the moment, just staying consistent and turning up each week with the same attitude. As we've seen this weekend any team can win from the top of the league to the bottom."

"We're doing well but not getting carried away, at the moment we feel that we're kind of flying under the radar."

The Giants came away with another hard-fought victory away at Wakefield and as long as the side are picking up the two points the number 13 believes the Galpharm will be a happy place to be.

"It was good to pick up the two points and that's important for us. There are still a lot of things we need to work on and there were some good things and not so good things from the victory last weekend."

"We're still a long way off our best and it's a big hill to climb, its round six and there's 30 or something games left so there's still a long way to go."
Faiumu has recently come back into the side after his injury lay-off and feels his own game is also going to steadily improve with the more rugby he plays.

"I'm just happy to be back playing, I've come off the back of some big surgery and I'm just trying to get some games under my belt."

"It's about creating a bit of match fitness which is what I need at the moment. The more games I play then the more I will benefit."

The next chance 'Fuey' and his fellow Claret and Gold team mates will have to impress will be this Friday's home clash against Castleford Tigers and Faiumu believes the fixture will be a difficult contest.

"Since I've been here we've always had some good battles against Castleford. They've got some very good players in Rangi, McGoldrick and Clark, players who can do anything and players which produce some magical plays anytime through the game."

Anderson looking forward to Harlequins duel
Thu March 3, 2011
Source: www.giantsrl.com

Huddersfield Giants Assistant Coach Paul Anderson previews Fridays Round 4 clash away to Harlequins RL.

Looking ahead to the clash against Rob Powell's table topping Quins, Anderson promised that the Giants won't be taking it easy in a bid to build on last week's victory against Hull FC.

"Harlequins seem to be working hard for each other and that is probably the key. Teams are maybe going into the games underestimating them and perhaps it has come back to bite them. It is all about respecting the opposition and that is the key for us this week.

"They fully deserve to be where they are because they've worked hard for each other in the first three rounds. We have got to go there mentally and physically ready to go to war. It is going to be a battle and if we take it as anything less than that then we will come unstuck.

"We aren't the sort of team that takes people lightly, we know what the required effort is for ourselves and if we don't do that then we come unstuck. We know that we are a pretty good team, but we are a good team because we work hard for each other."
Anderson also expressed his delight at seeing nine players called up to represent England.

Following the news that both the Elite Development squad and the England Knights squad feature a batch of Giants stars, Anderson states that it is a sign that the club is moving in the right direction.

"As a whole and as a group of players and staff it tells us all that we are doing the right things," said Anderson.

"We are really, really pleased for all the selected individuals because they always put the required effort in during the week to improve themselves and it is nice to see the lads being recognised in terms of England selection."

Five players have been given a place in the England Knights development squad, designed to keep competition for places in the International set-up as fierce as possible.

Former Great Britain and England star Anderson is hoping that the clubs young Knights can take a lot from the experience, but at the same time remain grounded and focused.

"My message would be not to get too carried today and to keep doing what you're doing. They key for them is to keep trying to improve and aiming to make the team here week in week out. If they do that then hopefully they will keep moving up the pecking order and get the recognition that they deserve.

"You would like to think that they can benefit from that environment. They've just got to take it in their stride, accept it and take nothing for granted and just keep knuckling down and doing what they do."

FUEY ENJOYING GIANTS BATTLING MENTALITY
Popular forward David Faiumu is delighted to part of a team that isn't afraid to battle for victory.

Round 3 of Engage Super League XVI saw the Giants overcome Hull FC in a game where winning the battle in the forwards was key to getting the two points.

'Fuey' admits that last week's success was down to a successful game plan and that, with wintery conditions still a factor at this early stage, more blood and thunder performances are needed to build a platform for the rest of the season.

"We showed a lot of resilience against Hull," said Faiumu.

"It was one of the big things during the build up last week was to turn their big guys around and really make them work and to not give them easy metres. The onus was on the forwards to work the ball to Broughy (Danny Brough) with his excellent kicking game so it ended up working well.

"Something I've learnt since being over here is that earlier in the season you've just got to grind and grind and do tough, gritty work and things will then open up for you. You have definitely got to come with the mentality that you will get a smack today because the games are often physical early on in the year!"

The Kiwi and the rest of his Giants team mates now travel south to face league leaders Harlequins on Friday night.

Rob Powell's side have started the season with a positive attitude and Faiumu believes that some of the tactics used last time out against Hull FC will be needed to come away from The Twickenham Stoop with all two points.

"Their camp must be a pretty happy and confident one at the moment.

"We have just got to do our best to get in their faces and to take that tough mentality down there and step it up another notch from last Sunday. The only way to knock their confidence down is to get in their faces and give it to them."

The 27-year-old has found himself entering the action from the interchange bench so far this season with his enthusiasm and agility key attributes for Nathan Brown's side.

This is a role that the Samoan International is more than happy to play and he is loving life at the club following a new 2 year contract he signed recently to stay with the claret and gold.

"I will just do whatever is needed for the team at the moment and I am happy wherever Browny puts me really just to get some game time.

"My sort of role at this club is to give a bit of energy to the boys when they are bit flat or when things aren't going so well.

"I'm really happy here, when I turn up for training every day I normally have a smile on my face and that's a good indication that my family is happy and that we are settled in the area. We have met some good people in the community; my kids are at school so when your family is happy it translates itself to the football field."
