McDermott reveals Quins squad to face Leeds
Thu April 23, 2009

Tony Clubb returns to the Harlequins Rugby League squad that will face Leeds Rhinos on Friday, having been rested for last weekend's match against Hull KR. Meanwhile, Ben Kaye who won a Grand Final with the Leeds Senior Academy, is set to play against his hometown club.

Matt Gardner, who made his debut a fortnight ago, is again included in the 19. Harlequins head coach, Brian McDermott, said he is impressed with how Gardner is developing.

"There's a waiting list for full backs and wings in our team, and the bloke who plays best gets it. At the moment I'm really pleased with how Matt is playing and I hope he keeps his shirt for a long time."

Although Leeds have suffered mixed fortunes in the last few rounds, including a defeat to Salford City Reds, McDermott is taking nothing for granted.

"I don't think form has ever effected Leeds, especially the current team. Last year they went into the Grand Final out of form and not playing their best stuff, yet they won.

"What we've got to do is arrive at Headingley with the right mentality and right attitude. It's not about game-plans or individuals, it's about us entering that stadium believing we can win the game."

The last time Harlequins played Leeds they won in 28-24 in a thrilling match at the Stoop. Although both teams have seen numerous personnel changes since then, McDermott believes that famous victory will be at the back of his player's minds.

"Whilst that match was played out with a different group of people, what it does show is that Leeds can be beaten. When we beat them last year, we had a lot of youngsters in our side, and this year they'll have the knowledge that Leeds can be beaten."

Gardner signs for Harlequins

Harlequins Rugby League is delighted to announce the signing of winger, Mat Gardner from Salford City Reds.

Gardner, 23, made his Super League debut for Huddersfield Giants in 2006 and enjoyed a memorable first season, scoring a hat trick against Les Catalans. After a second season with Huddersfield he moved to Salford City Reds, before deciding on a move to the Capital.

Harlequins Rugby League head coach, Brian McDermott described the signing as further proof that young talent is drawn to playing in London: "He along with a few more have made a decision to give it a go down here in London and we are looking forward to working with him."

McDermott first met Gardner whilst assistant coach at Leeds Rhinos, which Gardner said helped form his decision to move: "I understand what the coach expects from his players and most importantly I want to deliver."

Gardner admitted to feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement ahead of moving to London. However, his new flat mates are helping him to settle in: "I'm living with fellow Harlequins players Matt Gafa and Daniel Heckenberg which is lots of fun and they've made me feel very welcome."

Mat Gardner joins the Harlequins squad for pre-season training, which is now in its second week.
