Rhinos Gibson ruled out for the season
Fri May 11, 2007
Source: www.leedsrugby.com

England international Ashley Gibson has been ruled out for the remainder of the engage Super League season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against Catalans Dragons a fortnight ago.

Gibson, 20, made four appearances for England last year in the Federation Shield and had become a first choice for the Rhinos this season. However, scans this week have revealed the extent of the injury which will require a full reconstruction before Gibson begins the long process of rehabilitation.

Commenting on the injury Gibson said, "The knee just felt weak at first and I had a fitness test on Saturday to try and play against Bradford down in Cardiff. However, the specialists have told me I need an operation and hopefully we can get it done as soon as possible. It is obviously disappointing, especially as I had gained a place in the team this season but I am young and I have got faith in the medical team at the Rhinos that they will get me back fit as soon as possible."

Head Coach Tony Smith added, "We are all disappointed for Ashley because he had worked hard this season and deserved his place in the starting line up. However, he has got time on his side and I am sure he will come back stronger than ever from this set back."

Rhinos fans favourite gets promotion
Wed January 24, 2007
Source: www.leedsrugby.com

England international Ashley Gibson has been handed a massive boost ahead of the start of the new engage Super League season by being awarded the number 20 squad number for the Rhinos.

It is the first time that Gibson has been named in the top 20 senior players at the club and is a reward for his achievements over recent seasons and during the pre-season campaign.

The promotion will be especially well received by one section of the Rhinos support, the fans website southstander.com. The site sponsored Gibson last season and will continue to support the rising star in 2007. They sell £10 shares in the player to raise the money for the player sponsorship fee and then all the benefits of the sponsorship are divided out amongst the shareholders.

"The members of SouthStander.com are delighted that Ashley has been rewarded for his hard work by being given the number 20 shirt for the 2007 season. We will be supporting him again this year as he further establishes himself as one Leeds' Super League stars.

"Sponsoring a fringe player is usually a risk, not knowing if he'll be loaned out or moved on, but in Ash we knew we were backing a player who had the necessary skill and dedication to become a first team regular and we are sure that he will go from strength-to-strength this season.

"Ash was our Academy Player of the Season in 2005, voted for by the site regulars. Just for once it is nice to say 'we told you so!"
said Southstander.com moderator Paul Coward.

Rhinos Head Coach Tony Smith added, "Ashley is an exciting prospect for us and has already shown he has the ability to perform both for club and country. He has performed well in pre-season and thoroughly deserves his elevation to the top 20 squad. As always, the squad numbers will count for little once the season starts however it is a well earned recognition for his hard work to date."

Gibson elevation to the first team squad means the Rhinos have now completed their squad for the start of the 2007 engage Super League season. The squad list in full is:

1 Brent Webb
2 Scott Donald
3 Clinton Toopi
4 Keith Senior
