Brown confident in his troops
Sat July 23, 2011
Source: www.giantsrl.com

Huddersfield Giants Head Coach Nathan Brown is well aware of the 'sudden death' nature of Sunday's trip to the Probiz Coliseum as the claret and gold travel to face Castleford Tigers in the Carnegie Challenge Cup Quarter-Final (3.30pm).

The Giants will be looking to reach the last four of Rugby League's most prestigious competition with Terry Matterson's Tigers standing in the way;

"Its sudden death football and both sides have got a lot to play for ? the loser knows they are gone for another year and the winner will throw their name in the hat to go within one game of Wembley. This game is a lot different than playing a Super League match and if you lose you can't progress, all we are focusing on is putting in a performance that is good enough to get to beat Castleford this week.

"We have had some good training sessions this week, unfortunately Sunday didn't go well for us but those things happen and you don't become a bad team overnight, in the same way that you don't become a good team overnight. We have just had an indifferent couple of weeks, it's not ideal but it happens and you have got to move on. Obviously you would rather win than lose but sides go through glitches throughout the year and you have just got to move on."

Deprived of the services of Kevin Brown, Luke O'Donnell and David Fa'alogo, Brown is confident the replacements available are more than capable of helping the side achieve their target;

"The combination we will play with is one that has won for us in the past and that is the key. It's not an untried combination and the players in key positions have played in sides that have beaten Castleford before. There should be plenty of belief amongst the guys that they can do well. I have seen sides go through a lot more desperate stages and win games and I've also seen sides be in a lot better positions and lose games too.

"We've had a bit of a rough run with our key players in the last two weeks. The first two thirds of the year they didn't change a great deal other than Robbo (Luke Robinson) missing the first 5 rounds, but Lunty (Shaun Lunt) was fit at that point so we managed pretty well. We are not asking players to do something that they haven't done well in at some stage throughout the year, whether in games or in training. In such an important game it helps the players to have that confidence and know they have done well in those positions."

GILMOUR READY FOR CUP BATTLE

Back-Row forward Lee Gilmour spoke ahead of Sunday's 'do or die' Carnegie Challenge Cup clash against Castleford Tigers at the Probiz Coliseum (3.30pm).

The 32 year old has been involved in no less than six Challenge Cup finals with former clubs Bradford Bulls and St Helens; he knows that the claret and gold will have to 'up the intensity' as they face Terry Matterson's Tigers;

"I think as a senior player you have to lead by example and say the right things but once we are all out on that pitch everyone has got to step up and perform to the best of their ability. We all want to get to Wembley and in this type of game you can't have three or four players below par, every player no matter whether they are experienced or inexperienced has to go out there and do the job that Browny has given them to do.

"Our intensity and our attitude wasn't what it should be last week, they got into our faces and bullied us and usually it's something we manage to do to other teams. Hopefully this week we will see seventeen blokes willing to give everything they have got for eighty minutes to try and get us into the last four of the Challenge Cup.

"I'm very aware of how special this competition is and I'm still desperate to play in as many finals and win as many trophies as I can before I hang my boots up. Hopefully if we can put in a good performance and progress to the semi-final then we will have a chance this year, we'll give it everything we have got to try and do that."

Gilmour is confident that the Giants will be able to cope with the loss of Kevin Brown, Luke O'Donnell and David Fa'alogo for the last eight clash against the Tigers, calling on the travelling claret and gold support to be the teams 18th man on the pitch;

"I'm sure the fans will be in good voice and I look forward to what will hopefully be a good following backing us on Sunday. The fans have been great since I've arrived at the club and I remember last year at home to Hull FC where we were 18-0 down early on in the game and the fans played a big part in helping us get the win, they were outstanding that day.

"We know we've been below par for the last couple of weeks and I'm sure they are as disappointed as us. The players have been doing everything they can behind the scenes and in training to get us back to our best and if they can turn up in good numbers on Sunday and support us then hopefully we'll do our bit.

"The players that are coming into the side are not new to the positions and they have been involved in good performances for us previously. When senior players are missing it always gives an opportunity for someone to come in and make an impact on the game. It's a good opportunity for a few blokes on Sunday and you never know it could be one of them who grabs the headlines this week."

Gilmour signs to remain a Giant
Fri June 24, 2011
Source: www.giantsrl.com

Huddersfield Giants star Lee Gilmour will remain in the claret and gold for at least a further two years after signing a contract extension with the Club.

The former Great Britain back rower was pleased to extend his time with the Giants:

"I'm delighted to sign a new two year deal with the Giants. It is a great club and a fantastic place to be around. As a team we are going places and I'm looking forward to the next two years and hopefully winning some silverware. When I joined we already had a great set up with Nathan and the coaching staff and we have continued to progress in my time here. We signed Luke O'Donnell for this year and the young squad members have continued to improve and so we have some great young talent coming through to the first team. We also have a great medical set up and at my age you have got to make sure you look after yourself. We have a fantastic fitness base through the conditioning Paul Watson has done with us and working with our physio Nathan Mill, I keep on top of my body's needs. We also have a good rehabilitation and masseuse set up so we get well looked after and that helps us to perform on the football field."

Head Coach Nathan Brown believes his star man still has plenty more in the tank:

"Gilly is very professional, he is a winning player and wherever he has played he has won things. Since he has been at the Giants his form has been very good and consistent. He looks after his body really well and as far as a back rower goes he is blessed with good pace and these two factors have given him good longevity in the game. You can never have too many winners in the team and there wouldn't be many more back rowers in the competition that record the line breaks that Gilly does and he definitely creates good attacking opportunities for the team. Defensively his pace gets the team out of trouble and his scrambling defence is very good. As a whole Lee is a very experienced and winning player who looks after himself and everyone enjoys having him around."
