Goodwin re-signs with Raiders
Thu April 17, 2008

Flamboyant Raiders fullback Bronx Goodwin has re-signed with the Canberra Raiders, in a new three deal which will see him in the nation's capital until at least the end of 2011.

Goodwin has been with the club for four seasons since arriving from Cronulla, and has been touted as the future fullback for the Green Machine, following the imminent departure of William Zillman to the Gold Coast Titans at the end of the season.

A natural rugby league player with a good turn of pace and superb on field vision, Goodwin has a strong family connection to the NRL, through famous father Ted, and brothers Luke and Bryson.

After signing the new deal, Goodwin said he was happy that he had been given the opportunity to stay with the Raiders, and would look at repaying their faith in him with some good on-field performances.

"Its good for me and the club has been kind in giving me three years so I'm happy," Goodwin said. "I've got the fullback position now, and I've got to keep working on my own game and hopefully keep the spot for a long time to come."

Goodwin said the security of a three year deal was something he would look to build on, by working on his game and taking himself to the next level.

"I've been here for four years and for them to show faith by giving me another three years is awesome, and obviously I'm going to repay them with every dollar they've spent on me," he said. "I'll keep working on my game and obviously I'll get better, there's always room for improvement."

With David Furner set to take over in 2008 as head coach Goodwin said he had faith in the current Raiders assistant, after playing under him in 2005 in the Premier League.

"I've played under Dave a lot, he's tough and he's a hard style coach and that's the best thing for me to keep me on track," he said. "I know what he's expecting of me week in and week out by being assistant coach now, so I expect that to be the same next year."

Goodwin said the main reason for him staying in Canberra was to stay close to the players he has been with since he arrived, and couldn't think of a better place to continue his career.

"This is my home now and I've made close mates, and one of the biggest reasons I've stayed here is to be with a bunch of guys who I've grown up with playing my senior football with and I just don't want to leave."

Raiders CEO Don Furner said Goodwin's re-signing was a must for the club, and said the club had rewarded his desire to stay and his attitude towards his football with a three year deal.

"Bronx has always had the talent, and what he touched on was important, there's a good group of guys here and there close mates and that's been prevalent in the other guys we've been speaking to as well," Furner said. "I think we have a really good bunch of blokes here wit no big egos and they all get on really well.

"Generally speaking you want to play footy with your mates so it's good to hear him say that."

Goodwin the new Raider number one

Bronx Goodwin will replace William Zillman at fullback on Saturday night, for the Raiders first home match of the season against the St George-Illawarra Dragons at Canberra Stadium.

Zillman is set to undergo his second knee re-construction in as many seasons after re-injuring his left knee on Saturday night against the Panthers, in a huge blow to both him and the club.

His injury though opens the door for Goodwin to make the number one jumper his own in 2008, with the flamboyant fullback keen to make up for Zillman's absence with a strong performance against the Dragons.

Scott Logan is the other injury concern for the Green Machine with his injured cheekbone expected to keep him out from anywhere between 4-8 weeks. Michael Weyman has been brought back into the squad to cover for Logan, while Lincoln Withers (rib cartilage) has also been named on an extended Raiders bench.

Withers will have to prove his fitness if he is to play on Saturday night against his old club, but also faces tough opposition from Raiders rake Ryan Hinchcliffe, who turned in a star performance against the Panthers at CUA Stadium.

Raiders Coach Neil Henry said he would re-evaluate the side later in the week depending on the availability of Withers who is still battling a rib injury, and on the weather conditions.

"We've got 18 players and we'll just see how Lincoln is," Henry said. "If he's Ok there's a possibility he'll play and we just need to see if we want to use two hookers.

"Ryan Hinchcliffe was very good last week so he's retained his spot for the moment and the weather conditions will dictate things as well. If it's a bit wet we might be better off going with some smaller men in the middle."

Henry said he was happy with the way Bronx Goodwin accommodated the loss of William Zillman last week, and was confident he could fill the huge loss of Zillman against the Dragons and hopefully beyond.

"I think he attacked the ball well at fullback, he made a couple of strong tackles and stopped a few people who made line breaks so I was happy with his commitment defensively," he said. "He does wander around the field a bit and can bob up, as he scored some amazing tries last year, and he's quite comfortable at fullback."

Raiders Prop Michael Weyman gets his chance to prove his worth to the side on Saturday evening when he returns to the side for the injured Scott Logan, and said he will be ready for the challenge.

"There's a lot competition at the moment and I think it was a bit of a wake up call last week by having a run in the Queensland Cup," Weyman said. "It really hit home and it made me realise I need to take every chance I get now and this weekend will be the first opportunity for me to get back in the team."

In a positive sign for the Raiders both Tom Learoyd-Lahrs and Ben Jones will make there first appearances for the season in Queensland this weekend, for the Raiders feeder club Souths Logan.
