Wigan get the points over Salford

Wigan Warriors got back to winning ways with an eight-try blitz of Salford City Reds.

Centre Darrell Goulding, who scored five tries for the City Reds while on loan in 2009, led the way with a first-half double as the Warriors responded to last week's last-gap defeat to Warrington Wolves.

There were no such slip-ups here, as they punished Salford for giving away too many early penalties to claim their 12th win a row against the City Reds.

Salford were without winger Jodie Broughton for the fifth successive game while Danny Williams replaced Ashley Gibson on the other flank. Centre Chris Nero and prop Shannan McPherson were also missing.

Wigan were without points machine Pat Richards with a thigh injury to give 18-year-old Matthew Russell his second start for the club. Captain Sean O'Loughlin was out while prop Lee Mossop returned after a two-week absence for the suspended Epalahame Lauaki.

Wigan went ahead in the third minute when Goulding was put through by Harrison Hansen with Josh Charnley slotting over the kick from the touchline.

But with ball in hand Salford looked the part and hit back with two tries from Aussie stand-off Daniel Holdsworth and winger Williams.

Holdsworth missed both kicks but Salford were 8-6 in front after 12 minutes. But that was as good as it got for the City Reds as Wigan slipped into overdrive.

Goulding scored his second try before livewire full-back Sam Tomkins got in on the act. First he set up Charnley in the 21st minute and then went over himself after being put through the gap by Gareth Hock, with Charnley improving both.

There was more misery for the Reds when centre George Carmont completed a sweeping move and loose forward Liam Farrell barged over with Charnley missing both kicks.

The nearest Salford came was when Williams got on the end of a Holdsworth kick but the try was ruled out for offside and Wigan went in 30-8 in front at half-time.

The Warriors started the second half where they left off with Tomkins touching down after four minutes and Charnley adding the extras.

But Salford always looked dangerous on the rare occasions they got into the Wigan half and a clever break from Williams sent Luke Patten storming in under the posts in the 55th minute to give Holdsworth an easy conversion.

Wigan's try number eight came when Russell touched down in the corner in the 60th minute with Charnley missing his fourth kick from eight attempts.

Salford had the last word when Welsh prop Jordan James ploughed over in the final minute and Holdsworth converted but it was too little too late.

Wigan secure four youngsters on long-term contracts

Further to the announcement that Sam and Joel Tomkins have each signed new five-year deals with the Warriors, Wigan are delighted to unveil that Liam Farrell, Josh Charnley, Darrell Goulding and Harrison Hansen have also agreed new long-term contracts with Wigan.

Liam Farrell and Josh Charnley have each agreed 5-year contracts, expiring in 2015, with the last two seasons being optional in the Clubs favour.

Internationals Darrell Goulding and Harrison Hansen have both agreed 3-year contract extensions, expiring in 2013, with the final year again in Wigan's favour.

Chairman Ian Lenagan is delighted with the new contracts for the four Club Trained players.

"It gives me great pride to be able to announce the re-signings of these four players. Darrell has just gained his first International call up, whilst Harrison is a regular selection for Samoa, and we firmly believe that Liam and Josh will be England Internationals of the future.

"As the 2013 Rugby League World Cup approaches, this provides a great fillip for the sport to be able to tie down some of our best young talent to long-term contracts, thus enabling them to continue their Rugby League development at their home-town Club."

Michael Maguire added:

"These four players have all emerged in the last couple of seasons, with Darrell, Harrison and Liam playing an important role in our team success last season. As we all know Josh went on loan to Hull KR and performed outstandingly well. During pre-season all of the players have showed the hunger and desire that is required to reach the very top, and now the contracts are finalised they can focus solely on training and playing well."

Liam Farrell commented:

"Wigan is my home-town Club and wearing the Cherry & White shirt was a boyhood dream. I am proud to commit my future to the Club and hope to continue my development over the coming months and years, playing alongside some World Class players in the Wigan Team."
