England coach to visit Australia on fact-finding mission
Wed March 28, 2012
England Rugby League coach Steve McNamara will travel to Australia this week for a 21-day fact-finding mission where he will meet all eight of the English NRL based players.

McNamara will spend the first week in Sydney before moving onto Melbourne for five days and returning to Sydney for the final week.

"Each year I always try to get over to Australia to keep abreast of Rugby League and other sporting developments in the Southern Hemisphere," said McNamara.

"I have a number of meetings planned with clubs, coaches, other Australian based sports and, most importantly, all of the English players playing in the NRL.

"I will have a couple of meetings with the players where I will present our plans for the next two years. The Australian based players, alongside the ETS and Knights squads, form an integral part of our plans ensuring we are fully prepared over the next two years."

The England boss will also carry out a number of media interviews during his time in Australia and has agreed to speak to broadcast and written media with a view to creating awareness of the England programme in the build up to the Rugby League World Cup in 2013

"I think it is important to continue to spread the word on the work we are doing at international level," added McNamara.

"I have agreed to speak to a number of journalists, radio stations and TV shows whilst I'm in Sydney and I hope to get across my plans with the England team as we continue our preparation ahead of the World Cup in 2013. It is important to embrace the sport and there is no better way to create awareness of the international game than speaking to the Australian media in their own backyard."

McNamara will visit a number of high profile sporting organisations including NRL clubs Brisbane Broncos, Canterbury Bulldogs, Melbourne Storm, Newcastle Knights South Sydney Rabbitohs, Sydney Roosters and Wests Tigers. He will also be a guest of AFL teams Essendon Bombers and Sydney Swans.

Michael Ennis will lead the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs into battle for the first time on Saturday night as the Club gets its National Rugby League campaign underway against the Penrith Panthers.

Ennis makes his first appearance for the year in a side that also features key off-season recruit James Graham, who will play his first competition game for his new Club off the interchange bench, with Aiden Tolman and Sam Kasiano named to start the match by head coach Des Hasler.

Other key selections sees Josh Reynolds named at five eighth outside Trent Hodkinson, while Jonathan Wright will partner Josh Morris in the centres. Also making a return to the NRL is winger Bryson Goodwin.

In the forwards, versatile backrower Dene Halatau has been selected alongside Frank Pritchard in the second row.

A six man bench has been picked for the match, featuring Graham, Greg Eastwood, Corey Payne, Joel Romelo, Kris Keating and Marty Taupau.

Saturday's match kicks off at 7.30pm at Centrebet Stadium.

In the Toyota Cup, head coach Andy Patmore has selected five eighth Moses Mbye as his skipper for the season opening clash against the Panthers.

Mbye, who graduated from the SG Ball program at the back end of 2011, scored a double inside the opening 15 minutes of his Toyota Cup debut against Manly Warringah in round 24 of last season.

The side also features plenty of Toyota Cup experience, with returnees Gerard McCallum, Ed Murphy, David Klemmer, Dean Janda, Michael Ioapo, Tupou Sopoaga, Lachlan Burr and Oliver Gordon named in Patmore's 18 man squad.

The Toyota Cup clash kicks off at 5.15 on Saturday, also at Centrebet Stadium.

And the Bulldogs will feature six players with NRL experience in their NSW Cup side to kick off the season against Mounties at Belmore Sports Ground at 3pm on Saturday.

Winger Michael Lett, centres Luke MacDougall and Tim Lafai, half Trent Cutler, prop Tim Browne, and second rower Jake Foster have all been included in coach Barry Ward's side, as have Toyota Cup graduates Josh Jackson and Dale Finucane.
