Harris previews Wigan v North Wales Cup clash
Fri April 13, 2012
Source: www.wiganwarriors.com

Cup holders Wigan Warriors begin their 2012 Carnegie Challenge Cup programme on Sunday with the home game at the DW against Championship One side, North Wales Crusaders, 3pm kick off.

Warriors Assistant Coach Iestyn Harris was of course in charge of the old Crusaders Club before joining Wigan and admitted that although Sunday's fixture is against a whole new Club it is a game the cherry and whites need to be wholly ready for,

"Clive Griffiths is doing a great job there, I have watched the last couple of games that they have had, this will be a different type of game for us this weekend. They are obviously in a lower division than us and that can sometimes make it slightly difficult, but we will be making sure we give them the respect they deserve. The Crusaders have worked hard to get themselves where they are and we will make sure we are fully professional the way we go about the game.

"We have set some standards this year both individually and as a team and it's important we keep those at a high level because the week after we travel to Hull and we can't allow ourselves to drop for a week because it is then difficult to regain them again."

On the Crusaders themselves, Harris added,

"Structurally they look very good, Clive has got them playing to a very good structure both defensively and offensively, they have only been running for six months so it's a big ask for them to come to Wigan but we will be prepared. We are making sure this game is about us and how we perform rather than what the Crusaders throw at us."

A reminder that only the East and West Stands are open for the game and tickets can be purchased in person from the DW Stadium Ticket Office, by calling 0871 66 33 552 ( calls cost 10p per minute from a BT landline, other operators may vary) and online via www.wiganwarriors.com.

Wigan announce Shaun Wane as Coach; Iestyn Harris as Assistant
Thu October 13, 2011
Source: www.wiganwarriors.com

Wigan Warriors have announced the appointment of Shaun Wane as the Club's new Head Coach, with Wales Coach Iestyn Harris as Assistant Coach. Both have agreed two year contracts for Seasons 2012 and 2013 with a further option for 2014.

Wigan also confirm Paul Deacon's decision to retire from playing and his welcome to the Club's Coaching Staff under an initial 3-Year Contract.

Shaun has been at Wigan as a Coach since 2003, working initially with the Academy and Reserve sides before progressing to become Lead Assistant Coach to Michael Maguire and the First Team in 2009.

Iestyn, the current Wales national Coach, joins Wigan after a year as Head Coach of Crusaders RL in Super League.

Speaking about the appointments, Owner and Chairman Ian Lenagan said:

"We are delighted to unveil our new all-British Coaching Team of Shaun Wane and Iestyn Harris to lead Coaching at all levels within the Club in conjunction with Mark Bitcon and Kris Radlinski. I sought continuance of the methods, systems, analytics, discipline and performance established so well by Michael Maguire and Shaun was the perfect candidate to continue that approach, and even improve it.

"Shaun did extremely well whilst cutting his coaching teeth with the Club's younger sides, leading both the Academy and Reserve Grades to Grand Final successes over a number of Seasons. He was responsible personally for the development of so many current Wigan First Team Squad members."

"Shaun has played a huge role behind the scenes alongside Michael Maguire, Mark Bitcon and Kris Radlinski, turning the Club's fortunes around with the 2010 Grand Final win and 2011 Carnegie Challenge Cup triumph. He was a no nonsense player and is now a quality British Coach who is highly respected throughout the game and is a natural successor to Michael.

"We are also very pleased to welcome Iestyn Harris to the Wigan Club. Iestyn has done an outstanding job in Super League with the Crusaders, firstly as an Assistant Coach, before taking over as Head Coach at the start of last season. He has also led Wales to qualification for this seasons Four Nations and is a passionate ambassador of Rugby League in the Principality. We are very happy that we have been able to secure his services to join our Coaching Team and are certain that he will play a big role in any future success."

Speaking about his appointment as Head Coach, Shaun Wane said:

"This is a very proud day for me and I am thrilled to take over as the Head Coach of my hometown Club. I have enjoyed working with Michael (Maguire) for the last two years and have learned so much from him. It has been great to play my part in helping to bring Cup success back to Wigan and I am looking forward to building on these achievements in the next couple of seasons.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for me and one I am really looking forward to. We already have some excellent people behind the scenes and the addition of Iestyn adds further quality to our backroom team. We also have a determined and committed playing squad and we are all fully focussed on building on what has been achieved both on and off the field in the last two years."

Iestyn Harris added:

"I am thrilled to join such a prestigious Club as Wigan and am looking forward to working with Shaun, the staff and the players. The Wigan Club has gone from strength to strength in recent years and I'm hoping to assist in its continued development.

"I was obviously disappointed how things ended at Crusaders but that is now in the past and I am concentrating on my commitments with Wales and then to the start of pre-season with Wigan. It is a really exciting time for me in my career."

Shaun Wane takes up his position as Head Coach with immediate effect, while Iestyn Harris will join the Wigan Club once his involvement with Wales in the forthcoming Four Nations Tournament comes to an end.
