The South Sydney Rabbitohs are pleased to announce their NRL and Toyota Cup sides to take on the Bulldogs in round two of the NRL's Centenary Season this Friday 21 March at ANZ Stadium.

Head Coach Jason Taylor has named South Sydney junior Eddie Paea at halfback replacing the injured Craig Wing. Ben Rogers returns to the side at five-eighth, with Shannon Hegarty also returning to the starting line-up. Germaine Paulson will shift to the centres with Nigel Vagana sidelined with a lower back and hamstring injury. Second-rower Ben Lowe will make his first grade debut this Friday night with Luke Stuart reverting to the interchange bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs are the most successful Club in Rugby League. Established in 1908, the South Sydney Club has won 20 first grade premierships and provided 62 internationals for the Australian side, and have famously worn their cardinal red and myrtle green colours since inception. In 1925, South Sydney was dubbed 'The Pride of the League' and the Rabbitohs are known as this to this day. The rebirth of the Rabbitohs began on 7 June, 2006 through a new partnership between Russell Crowe, Peter Holmes a Court and the 8000 Members of the Club.

Hegarty - I've still got a couple of good years left in me
Fri January 4, 2008
by Matthew O'Neill
Souths winger Shannon Hegarty might he heading into the twilight of his career, but he still believes he has at least two good years in him before his time is up.

Hegarty played 109 first grade games for the Roosters from 1999-2004, which included four Grand Final appearances where he scored a try in the Roosters 2002 triumph. He transferred to the Rabbitohs in 2005 and has took part in exactly 50 first grade games for Souths with 18 of those coming last year where Souths made the semi finals for the first time in 18 years.

The 159 first grade veteran has also played for Queensland at State of Origin level and represented Australia in 2003.

Hegarty said, "I've still got a couple of good years left in me.

"What the club did last year was a miracle. South Sydney is now solid from top to bottom.

"Everyone knows where they fit in, and that wasn't happening in recent years what with all the infighting.

"Now everyone wants to be part of Souths success and I guess I'll have to watch my position.

"There are a lot of younger, highly motivated young blokes about now.

"In the recent past some players could just about take their place in the team for granted. That won't happen again so I will have to perform at my best to stay in the top grade."

Hegarty at times was a villian amongst Souths supporters, but his experience proved vital in crucial matches when the Rabbitohs place in the Finals was on the line.

The 28-year-old missed the Rabbitohs semi-final loss against Manly when he was relegated from the top squad and his value was missed in the pressure stages.

Souths have Hegarty signed for at least another two years and he'll want to finish his career on a high and become one of the rare players to achieve the rare double of playing 100 first grade matches for two different clubs.

Previously Ron Coote played over 100 first grade games for both the Rabbitohs and Roosters and he won Premierships at both clubs. Hegarty will be hoping to follow in the same footsteps of winning a Premiership at the Rabbitohs after winning at the Roosters in 2002 and in the process pass 100 games.
