Source: www.warriors.co.nzThe Vodafone Warriors have made significant progress towards completing their NRL recruitment programme for the 2008 season.
The club today announced it had retained Kiwi second rower Epalahame Lauaki, signed hooker Ian Henderson from English Super League club the Bradford Bulls and secured three of New Zealand's best young players.
An option on Lauaki (23) has been taken up for the 2008 season and Henderson (24) has been signed on a two-year deal.
The trio of promising players - back rower Scott Jones (19), wing Malo Solomona (20) and prop Leeson Ah Mau (17) - will remain with the club until at least the end of the 2009 season. They will all be in NRL contention next year while Jones and Ah Mau will also be eligible for the Vodafone Warriors' team in the NRL's new under-20 competition.
Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said the signings brought the club closer to completing its NRL recruitment plans.
"We're in discussions with Logan Swann (who's on a one-year contract) and there is still some other work to be done," he said.
"From this side of the Tasman, we have seen how unsettling this time of the year can be with all the transfer movements going on at clubs in Australia.
"Luckily it has been fairly smooth for us, going back to early February when we started re-signing off-contract players.
"But it's also difficult on a personal level because we've had to release players due to salary cap constraints. They're players who have made a real contribution to the club."In that category are three of the club's Australian players centre Tony Martin, winger Todd Byrne and hooker George Gatis. Martin is in his fourth season with the club, Byrne his third and Gatis his second.
"Tony, Todd and George have all worked really hard in their time with the club," said Vodafone Warriors head coach Ivan Cleary.
"They've been great with the effort they've put in and we wish them all the best for the future."At the same time, Cleary said the club's future had been boosted by signing the young trio of Jones, Solomona and Ah Mau, while retaining Lauaki and securing Henderson were also critical moves.
"Scott, Malo and Leeson are great examples of what we're striving to achieve with our development strategy," he said.
"Their games have benefited from playing for the Vodafone Auckland Lions in the New South Wales Premier League this year while Hame has been showing real improvement through more consistent exposure at first-grade level.
"Ian will bring a new dimension to the squad after three seasons with Bradford. He's a quality hooker who will give us more strength in that area."Henderson, born in Torquay in southern England but of Scottish heritage, started his English Super League career during the 2005 season. Within a few months he was a grand final winner when the Bulls beat Leeds 15-6 at Old Trafford and he was also in the Bradford side that swamped Wests Tigers 30-10 to win the World Club Challenge at Reebok Stadium in early 2006.
Raised in Australia, he had a brief taste of NRL football with the Sydney Roosters in 2003-04 and Parramatta in 2005 before signing with the Bulls. He has played for Scotland.

Source: www.bradfordbulls.co.ukBradford Bulls have today confirmed that Hooker Ian Henderson will leave the club at the end of the season to take up a contract with the New Zealand Warriors.
Henderson has made 65 appearances for the club, scoring 12 tries, since joining from Parramatta Eels midway through the 2005 season.
Bulls Coach Steve McNamara said today:
"We are very sorry to see Ian go as he has been tremendous for us. He has certainly embraced everything we have been trying to achieve at the club in his time here. We would have loved to have kept him for longer but fully understand his decision, which has been made for family reasons. He also has a burning desire to play once again in the NRL, an opportunity which has now arisen for him. I would like to thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him every success in the future."Ian Henderson is sad to be leaving the Grattan Stadium:
"I have had a tremendous two and a half years at Bradford and I wouldn't have left to play for any other English club. For family reasons I wanted to go back to Australia and this opportunity with the Warriors has come at just the right time for me. I am fully committed to trying to achieve success for the Bulls for the remainder of the season and want to thank everyone at the club for making my time here so enjoyable."News sent by:
