Melbourne Storm Team of the Decade announced
Sat June 23, 2007
Source: www.melbournestorm.com.au

Melbourne Storm tonight announced its "Team of the Decade" at the club's official 10th birthday Gala Dinner held at the National Gallery Victoria.

A crowd of close to 700 people saw many past and present players honoured with their induction into what has been judged to be the best team in Melbourne Storm's history.

Eight current players have been named in the line-up, while six retired players were also named. Three players who are still plying their trade with other clubs made up the remainder of the team.

Glenn Lazarus, the club's first big name signing, was named as captain of the team, while current coach Craig Bellamy was named as coach.

Storm CEO Brian Waldron said the members of the team of the decade showed just how many greats of the game had played for the club in its short history.

"The team is a collection of past greats and current champions," said Waldron.

"It's indicative of the strength of our future when current players such as Cam Smith, Billy Slater, Ryan Hoffman, Greg Inglis and many others are in this team announced tonight.

"It's also tremendous recognition for the likes of Glenn Lazarus, Marcus Bai, Matt Geyer and Stephen Kearney, just to name a few, for the outstanding contributions they have made to the club.

"The selection committee of John Ribot, Frank Stanton, Greg Brentnall and Steve Mascord had an extremely difficult time deciding the final 18 selected given the depth of talent this club has had in its brief but rich history."

Bird and Hoffman to make Origin debut, Kimmorley recalled
Tue June 5, 2007
by Matthew O'Neill
The NSW selectors have made three changes to their side for the crucial second match to be played in Sydney with Sharks duo Brett Kimmorley and Greg Bird and Melbourne's Ryan Hoffman coming into the squad.

Kimmorley and Bird replace injured duo Jarrod Mullen and Kurt Gidley while Hoffman replaces Anthony Tupou who has been dropped. Kimmorley won the hotly contested halfback position ahead of Manly's Matt Orford and Penrith's Craig Gower. The axing of Tupou was always on the cards with the form of Hoffman being too good to ignore. The injury to Gidley opened up the door for Bird to be selected and the bench adds more starch and depth to the forward pack.

Hoffman is the son of former Queensland hooker Jay Hoffman who would later player for the Canberra Raiders during the years 1982-87. Jay Hoffman represented QLD twice against NSW in 1979 & 1980 in the pre-Origin interstate era. Hoffman Snr also represented QLD against Great Britain in 1979.

Cronulla forward Paul Gallen narrowly missed out on selection with Bird and Hoffman winning the nod. Bird's versatility and Hoffman twice being 18th man this season for both Australia and NSW warranted selection this time around.

Bulldogs prop Mark O'Meley was another to miss selection as his performance against the Warriors last Sunday wasn't enough as his season has been hit by poor form and injury.

Queensland won the opening match in Brisbane coming from 18-6 down at half-time to emerge 25-18 victors. NSW have not lost a match at Telstra Stadium since its first Origin match in 1999 with Queensland's last victory in Sydney coming in 1998 at Aussie Stadium. Only twice in the NRL has the 3rd match been a dead rubber and the Blues will be determined to ensure that the tradition of the 3rd Origin match being a decider continues.

NEW SOUTH WALES:
1 Anthony Minichiello (Sydney Roosters)
2 Matt King (Melbourne Storm)
3 Jamie Lyon (Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles)
4 Matt Cooper (St.George-Illawarra Dragons)
5 Jarryd Hayne (Parramatta Eels)
6 Braith Anasta (Sydney Roosters)
7 Brett Kimmorley (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks)
8 Brett White (Melbourne Storm)
9 Danny Buderus (captain, Newcastle Knights)
10 Brent Kite (Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles)
11 Willie Mason (The Bulldogs)
12 Nathan Hindmarsh (Parramatta Eels)
13 Andrew Ryan (The Bulldogs)

Subs:
14 Luke Bailey (Gold Coast Titans)
15 Steve Simpson (Newcastle Knights)
16 Ryan Hoffman (Melbourne Storm)
17 Greg Bird (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks)

Coach: Graham Murray

The Queensland side will be named just after 2:00pm.
