Hohaia added to Kiwi touring team
Mon October 15, 2007
by NZRL
Warriors utility Lance Hohaia was today recalled to the Kiwis as a second replacement for their four-test tour to Britain and France.

With original selections Steve Matai (shoulder), Luke Covell (dislocated elbow) and Krisnan Inu (shoulder) all ruled out of the campaign, Hohaia (24) joins 19-year-old Sydney Roosters winger/centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall who was added to the squad last night.

Hohaia and Kenny-Dowall both joined the touring party as it prepared to leave for England today.

With Covell and Inu injured in yesterday's 0-58 Centenary Test defeat by Australia in Wellington, the Kiwis have lost their two frontline goal-kickers.

"That's one of the major reasons why Lance has been called in," said coach Gary Kemble.

"We need a goal-kicker now and Lance gives us that. He also provides cover for a number of positions - hooker, the halves and the centres."

Hohaia played the most recent of his seven tests in the opening match of the 2005 Tri Nations series. He was in the Tri Nations squad again last year but wasn't used in the test side, appearing only in the tour match against the New Zealand Residents in Greymouth.

The inclusion of Hohaia and Kenny-Dowall gives the Kiwis 23 players at the moment. Kemble said a 24th will be chosen after watching the All Golds take on the Northern Union in Warrington on Saturday.

Hohaia returns as Auckland Lions seek to extend winning run

Lance Hohaia returns at halfback for the Vodafone Auckland Lions' New South Wales Premier League clash against the Bulldogs at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday night.

Hohaia was 18th man for the Vodafone Warriors' NRL side last weekend, missing the premier league team's 19-16 victory against last year's beaten grand finalists the Newtown Jets.

With seven tries in just six premier league appearances this year, he'll provide a major boost to the Vodafone Auckland Lions as they seek to continue a run of form which has seen them beaten only once in the last six rounds of the competition.

Their latest victory completed their first run of three wins on end and kept alive hopes of success in their late bid for a spot in the play-offs.

With four rounds left, the Vodafone Auckland Lions have climbed to 10th on 20 points, just three points out of the top eight. Included in the final rounds are two points from a bye while each of their last three opponents - the Bulldogs, Penrith and Canberra - is ranked higher on the points table.

The Bulldogs will come to Auckland holding a four-point lead in the competition for what will be their third clash of the season against the Vodafone Auckland Lions.

In the previous meetings, the Bulldogs won 32-28 at Telstra Stadium in the third round and 36-16 in the 12th round at Mt Smart Stadium.

With Hohaia returning, the Vodafone Auckland Lions are set to have as many as eight players from the Vodafone Warriors' NRL squad - fullback Todd Byrne, winger Patrick Ah Van, centres Tony Martin and Aidan Kirk, halfback Hohaia, hooker Corey Lawrie and back rowers Louis Anderson and Sonny Fai.

Like the Vodafone Warriors in the NRL, the Vodafone Auckland Lions have been able to field a stable line-up in recent weeks.

Three players - back rowers Sonny Fai, Scott Jones and Lui Toimoana - haven't missed one of the side's 19 matches so far while winger Malo Solomona and captain Steve Buckingham have missed only one. Props Wayne McDade and Upu Poching have appeared in 17 matches while fellow front rower Leeson Ah Mau and utility Constantine Mika have played 16 games.

Solomona is the leading try scorer with 14 with Fai closing to within one of him with his try against Newtown last Saturday.
