Kahler Shines In Jets Win

Tough forward Kris Kahler has spoken of his desire to force his way back into the NRL after putting in another whole-hearted performance in the Wizard Cup.

Kahler scored a try and produced several quality off-loads to help the Ipswich Jets on their way to their seventh victory of the season on Saturday night.

The 54-16 demolition of the Central Comets allowed the Kevin Walters-coached Ipswich side to maintain its standing at the top of the Wizard Cup ladder.

Although the Jets scored nine tries to three, Kahler felt the Jets could have won by an even healthier margin.

"The way we started, we really should have put a score on them," Kahler said.

"That's just one thing we've got to work on ? playing for 80 minutes instead of patches here and there."

Kahler, who is contracted to the Gold Coast Titans, has yet to play an NRL game this year.

"I'm definitely frustrated but because (Mark) Minichiello and (Anthony) Laffranchi are going so well there is not much I can do," the Gympie product said.

"I'm happy here but I feel like I've got a bit to offer still in the NRL so I wouldn't mind going somewhere else.

"If I wasn't playing well I would say Queensland Cup (is my level) but I feel I'm going well enough to be playing NRL."

If the Titans, or perhaps another NRL club, view the match tape from the latest Jets game, they would no doubt be impressed with Kahler's strong display.

The former Raiders prop scored Ipswich's second try of the match with a powerful run that left several Comets defenders sprawled across the turf.

The try and Scott Ireland conversion put Ipswich in front 12-0 but the Comets weren't about to throw out the white flag.

A brilliant try from the athletic Karl Johnson pegged the margin back to 12-4. It was soon 12-10 when giant forward George Turakura crashed over near the posts.

A Donald Malone four-pointer in the corner allowed the Jets to take a 16-10 advantage into the half-time break.

The Jets were never headed in the second half, although the Comets did become the first side to score a second-half point against Ipswich since the first round when Nat Bowman scored from a bomb.

An at times ill-disciplined Comets team was on the wrong end of a heavy penalty count in the second half. However, the Jets simply had too many big guns for the visitors, who are yet to win away from home in 2008.

Crowd favourite Donald Malone completed a hat-trick of tries in the final minute when he outsprinted the cover defence to score a breathtaking 70 metre special which brought the crowd to its feet.

Fullback Troy O'Sullivan and Scott Ireland also scored spectacular four pointers in the second half.

O'Sullivan showed blistering pace to score a sizzling try after slicing the Central line wide open.

Ireland's try also drew a big applause from a rowdy group of Ipswich fans in the can bar.

The big winger cut back on the inside after receiving a pass from Malone and raced away to score under the posts.

Uncompromising Canberra Raiders second rower Kris Kahler is the latest addition to the Gold Coast Titans playing roster after agreeing to a two year deal with the new NRL franchise.

Gold Coast Titans Managing Director Michael Searle saying, "The Signing of Kris as our 27th player is a true indication of our commitment to ensuring we have adequate depth for our inaugural year and beyond.

"Kris is highly rated by our coaching staff and his return to Queensland is a bonus for the Titans. He is a strong, tough player who will place pressure on the starting pack immediately. This is an awesome signing for our club.

Coach John Cartwright is surprised the Titans were able to secure a player of Kris's ability at this stage of the season.

"Kris was originally recommended to us by Matt Adamson, he is coming here for all the right reasons and we are excited to be able to add a player that can play in the front row and back row and who has a work ethic that will excite his fellow players.

"I am very pleased that we have a very physical and workmanlike pack that won't be taking a backward step. As a coach, that provides you with a chance to play enterprising football out wide."

Cartwright on Kris Kahler's form in 2006.

"Given he has forced his way back into the strong Raiders team after recovery from a shoulder reconstruction at the start of the season is a credit to him and his playing ability.

"He has had an outstanding back end of the season and we rated his performances highly and his work rate will be a real bonus for our pack."

Gold Coast Titans Football Manager Scott Sattler believes Kahler is a fantastic addition and a great fit for the 2007 Titans. "I think your players have got to reflect your Coach and Kris will fit into John Cartwright's plans very well. He is tough, durable and very mobile.

"Kris is one of those guys that players like playing alongside because he gets in there and does the dirty work. It's players like Kris who help clubs grind out tough wins. John identified Kris very early on and to be able to get him here is a huge boost to our already impressive forward pack."

For Kris it's a great opportunity and a chance to come home.

"The Titans have provided me with a fantastic opportunity to be a foundation player at a Queensland NRL Club and for that I am truly grateful. The quality of the roster is unbelievable and I am really looking forward to playing under John Cartwright and Billy Johnstone.

"I have heard a lot of really good things about John and I also believe the fitness regime of Billy Johnstone will help me reach the next level so I am very excited about the move to the Gold Coast."

The Titans haven't finished yet
The door isn't closed on recruitment for the Gold Coast Titans debut season with Managing Director Michael Searle suggesting another six players will be signed in the coming weeks.

"Some of those players will have NRL experience and the balance will be secured by our coaching staff through our feeder club system in the Queensland Wizard Cup."

With a roster of forwards that would be the envy of any NRL Club, Searle says backline depth is the new focus.

"The possibility of securing additional outside backs and a half, five/eight to protect us against a run of injuries in the halves has become our next objective."
