Why schedule representative matches on the same night?
Fri May 8, 2009
by Steve Kaless
Source: The Roar

The ARL might be a little miffed that the ANZAC Test has been somewhat overshadowed by the itchy feet of the last placed NRL club. But they may only have themselves to blame.

By scheduling the Test on the same night as the City Vs Country game, they've already taken away some of the spotlight.

In fact, there seems to be more interest than normal in the City Vs Country match, which is probably down to the fact that it is being seen as a genuine Origin trial for plenty of jumpers (given the fact that Queensland nearly makes up the entire Australian side).

This is something that those of us with more than half a brain have been banging on about for years. If the City Vs Country match is to have any point, it needs to be as a proper trial.

Remember when a certain analyst, who is constantly declaring he knows best and has the game's best interests at heart, especially those of bush footy, wanted all Origin players quarantined from the match, instantly turning it into a farce?

So hopefully we will learn something from the exercise.

Another thing we should learn is not to have such ridiculous clashes with representative football.

All rugby league eyes should be on the Test match, especially given its billing as a rematch of the World Cup final (although New Zealand don't have to give the trophy back if they lose).

But to have it on the same night as City Vs Country just dilutes it.

Of course, it does give Channel Nine a cracking double header. I hope they remember it at the next broadcast deal.

But what also dilutes it is when the new coach says, "I'll be picking on form," when what he really means is, "It will be the same old stagers".

Why doesn't every new coach feel the need to make a variation of the "reputations mean nothing" statement?

Rather than picking blokes in form, Sheens has gone for the novel approach of going with some players dramatically out of form.

Paul Gallen? Fair enough when the Sharks were firing, but what about when they are coming last. And he has already missed a few games on suspension.

Glen Stewart, Anthony Watmough and Brent Kite have all been pretty average for the Sea Eagles this year. Watmough's defence against Melbourne last Friday was barely of first grade standard.

As debated on this site earlier this week, it isn't like there aren't plenty of other candidates.

Of course, against a New Zealand side that has Dene Halatau at hooker, it should make it all academic.

But we've heard that before, haven't we.

Fittler's request, Geyer's Shark rescue, Barrett's comeback and more
Wed April 29, 2009
by Steve Mascord
SYDNEY Roosters coach Brad Fittler has this morning made a remarkable request: that representative selectors ignore the claims of several of his star players.

Fittler tells Rugby League Week today that if the likes of Braith Anasta, Willie Mason, Craig Fitzgibbon and Mark O'Meley are no hope of playing for New South Wales then it is pointless picking them for City-Country.

"If guys aren't being seriously considered for NSW, then this is probably a game for blooding young players,'' Fittler exclusively comments in RLW.

"If these players were left out for being so-called 'past it' then picking them for City-Country would seem to be contradictory to what representative football is all about.

"If they do get chosen, I'm sure they'll do their best and they will go with the club's full blessing but I thought all rep teams were picked with an eye on the future.''

Elsewhere, columnist Mark Geyer weighs into the Ricky Stuart-Phil Gould stoush by outlining how he would help struggling Cronulla.

"I can understand why Ricky wouldn't want Gus around but with the wooden spoon already in the mailing centre awaiting delivery to the Shire, maybe it's time he looked to someone different,'' Geyer writes.

"Someone like me?''

Sharks five-eighth Trent Barrett, meanwhile, is in line for a shock return to representative football after a four-year absence.

And the biggest surprise is that the comeback is set to be as Country's starting halfback, ahead of Newcastle gun Jarrod Mullen. The magazine says Barrett has considerable support from selectors and Laurie Daley's coaching staff going into this weekend's matches.

Chairman of selectors Jock Colley says: "Despite Trent being overlooked by NSW we think he still has plenty to offer Country.

"He will be strongly considered for our side.''

Manly have copped a bucketing from one of their own, 1982 Kangaroos skipper Max Krilich saying: "It's the props who need to lift.

"(Brent) Kite and (Josh) Perry haven't been going forward and making the territory and it needs to change - they have to do their job.''

Queensland chairman of selectors Des Morris, meanwhile, has revealed the Maroons could use all three of their gun fullbacks - Billy Slater, Karmichael Hunt and Matt Bowen - in the same side during this year's State of Origin series against NSW.

North Queensland's Bowen missed out on the preliminary Maroons squad named last night but Morris tells RLW he has rocketed back into contention in recent weeks.

Round Eight star Jamie Soward tells RLW how Wayne Bennett helped him exorcise his demons and Bulldogs coach Kevin Moore has guaranteed veteran winger Hazem El Masri his spot as long as he holds his current form.

The Mole reveals ANZAC Day hero Soward's link to Gallipoli, plus Matt Cooper, Darren Lockyer and Jarryd Hayne and the best in features, pictures and league news from around the globe.
