Saints lose Wellens and Laffranchi for Good Friday showdown

St Helens will be without captain Paul Wellens and prop forward Anthony Laffranchi for the Good Friday derby with Wigan Warriors after both players were handed one-match bans.

They were cited by the Rugby Football League's match-review panel for dangerous tackles during Saints' 28-16 win at Warrington Wolves and were tonight found guilty of the offences when they appeared in front of the RFL's disciplinary committee in Leeds. They were also fined £300.

Bradford Bulls forward John Bateman will miss both his club's Easter fixtures after being suspended for two games.

Bateman, who was accompanied to the hearing by coach Mick Potter and the club solicitor, was found guilty of making a dangerous throw on Hull FC scrum-half Brett Seymour during the Bulls' 24-18 away defeat.

Jetstar Gold Coast Titans forward Anthony Laffranchi is set to return from injury to play his 100th NRL match for the club in Saturday night's home clash against the Canberra Raiders at Skilled Park.

Jetstar Titans Coach John Cartwright today named Laffranchi to return from injury after missing last weekend's loss to competition heavyweights Melbourne with a corked thigh.

Inaugural Titan Laffranchi becomes the fifth Gold Coast player to reach the 100 game milestone for the club with just three matches remaining before he departs for UK Super League club St Helens at the end of this season.

Jetstar Titans Assistant Coach Trevor Gillmeister said it was a nice milestone for Laffranchi to reach after being a great servant for the Titans over the past five years.

"Boof's been a great part of this club since day one, coming from the Tigers winning a premiership,'' said Gillmeister.

"He's been tremendous for our young fellas. He's been a great bloke and just from a coaching point of view, he's one of those coachable blokes who does what he's told and you just enjoy having him around.''

The Titans have not been beaten in three matches against the Raiders on home soil at Skilled Park and in their previous encounter earlier this year secured a thrilling 23-22 golden point victory in the nation's capital.

However, Gillmeister said with both sides positioned in 14th (Canberra) and 16th (Titans) place on the ladder and desperate to finish the season on a high, there were no guarantees.

"Canberra is in the same boat as us but the beauty about this competition it you never know what's going to happen. Anyone can beat anyone on their day,'' he said.
