Barba poised to swoop NYC point and try scoring records
Thu August 28, 2008
by Matthew O'Neill
Bulldogs whiz kid Ben Barba holds a very comfortable lead as top point scorer and top scorer with two rounds to play in the first Toyota Cup season.

Barba had four weeks in first grade opening the door for his rivals to run him down and both Josh Dugan (Raiders) and Kevin Locke (Warriors) have racked up many points in the last month, but it looks like that Barba will hold firm until at least the Finals. Dugan's average of points per game is very similar to Barba's and he has been a major presence for the Raiders when he has been on the field. Barba returned last week for the Bulldogs where he scored one try and landed two goals for a total of eight points.

So far 11 players have racked up over 100 points this season with Souths providing two players - Eddie Paea and Chris Sandow. The latter is odds on favourite to take out the Peter Moore NRL Rookie of the Year award for his performances in the Rabbitohs revival in the second half of the season.

Brisbane's Jharal Yow Yeh became the second player to pass 20 tries for the season and despite playing three more games than Barba is still seven tries behind him.

Dugan, Barba and Locke are all in a tight race to see who finishes up as the leading goal kicker with Dugan leading Barba by one goal with Locke a further goal behind.

Sandow is poised to take out a unique double as being the most accurate goal kicker in the NRL and NYC competitions (minimum 10 goals). Sandow's strike rate in the NRL is 90% (18/20) and his NYC strike rate before promotion stood at 84% (47/56).

Ten players have landed drop goals this season in the Toyota Cup with Warriors Isaac John and Manly's Daly Cherry-Evans leading the way with three each.
