New Dad Stagg to play against Dragons as Lockyer breaks record
Fri August 15, 2008

WOW Brisbane Broncos lock David Stagg will has a special reason to play well tonight after becoming a father for the first time.

Stagg's wife Temika gave birth to a baby girl, Paige Olivia, yesterday afternoon.

The arrival of the little girl is also good news for the Broncos as Stagg will be free to play against the St George Illawarra Dragons at Suncorp Stadium tonight.

He missed last week's match in Auckland as his wife was past her due date, but said this morning he was raring to go for the Dragons.

"It will be a bit different playing out there as a dad," said Stagg today.

"But I had a good sleep last night and I am going to have a rest this afternoon, so I will be more than ready to play against the Dragons."

Stagg's availability is a blessing for the Broncos, with fellow locks Tonie Carroll and Greg Eastwood already out with injury.

The match will also be special for the Broncos' club as a whole, with Darren Lockyer to break the all-time first grade game record.

Tonight will be Lockyer's 298th match, eclipsing the mark of 297 set by Bronco original Michael Hancock.

Hancock, Lockyer, Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen and coach Wayne Bennett will be involved in a ceremony after the game to recognise the club captain's achievement.

Lockyer To Break Hancock's All Game Record
Mon August 11, 2008

DARREN Lockyer will break the record for most first grade appearances for the Brisbane Broncos club when he runs out against St George Illawarra on Friday.

The Suncorp Stadium match will be Lockyer's 298th game for the Broncos, after equalling club great Michael Hancock's tally of 297 last weekend.

Lockyer said today that breaking a record of such magnitude was never on his mind when he made his debut for the club against Parramatta back on June 25, 1995.

"When I was growing up to just play one game with the Broncos was the dream," he said.

"So you could say that I have more than exceeded my expectations and dreams.

"To be a part of an achievement like this is special simply because of the names and calibre of the people who have co me before me at the Broncos."

The man who held the record, former Queensland and Austra lian winger Hancock, said there could not be a more flattering outcome than his all-game record being beaten by Lockyer.

"The match on Friday will not be a sad day for me - it will be a happy one," said Hancock.

"It is a day of celebration for the club and records are made to be broken.

"Yes, my record will be gone. But for it to be broken by someone who is revered as one of the greatest players the game has seen is not so bad at all."

Lockyer went past Hancock's premiership match record of 274 last year, but still had a way to go to get to the 297-game mark that included first grade knockout cup matches and World Club Challenge games.

Lockyer's current tally of 297 consists of 286 premiership games plus 11 World Club Challenge matches.

Lockyer and Hancock will be part of a special post-match presentation on Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, which will include coach Wayne Bennett and chief executive Bruno Cullen.

Lockyer statistics:
  • All first grade games: 297 matches - (286 premiership games, nine Super League World Club Challenge matches, two World Club Challenge matches).
  • Points (all games): 1228 points (115 tries, 376 goals, 16 field goals)
  • Premiership match points: 1142 (111 tries, 341 goals, 16 field goals)
  • SL WCC points: 86 (4 tries, 35 goals)
  • WCC points: 0
