Source: www.qrl.com.auThe Ipswich Jets overcame the early send-off of star back-rower Lorenzo Maafu to record their first win of the Intrust Super Cup season.
The former Bulldog and Queensland Residents forward was given his marching orders in the fifth minute of Ipswich's clash with the Central Capras at Browne Park.
"I didn't really get a good view of it as it was on the far side, but it was for an alleged head butt," Jets co-coach Ben Walker said.
Playing with 12 men, the Jets put the setback behind them to lead 22-4 at half-time.
In an at times fiery second half, the Capras played some enterprising football to gradually claw their way back into the contest.
But unlike the previous three weeks, the Jets stayed in front on the scoreboard to secure a vital 36-28 victory.
"Shane (Walker) and I know that we've been playing better than this time last year, but we just haven't got the results," Ben said.
"Today was a start for us and hopefully we can get some confidence out of it."
Former Devils fullback Javarn White had a strong outing for the Jets, taking home the players' player award.
"He's taken a little bit of time to get used to how we play but today he really clicked," Walker said.
"Ian Lacey was great, and Nathaniel Neale was outstanding again. He played 80 minutes."
After two forgettable outings, the rebuilding Capras made some vast improvements today and matched the Jets with six tries of their own.
They have a short turnaround this week with a Thursday night match against the Northern Pride at Browne Park.
IPSWICH JETS 36 (Javarn White, Ramon Filipine, Donald Malone, Todd Riggs, Nathaniel Neale, Ian Lacey tries; Brendon Lindsay 6 goals) def CQ CAPRAS 28 (Reece Baker, Tyron Cranston, Russell Webber, Sailosi Vatubua, Brent Williams, John Clayton tries; Tyron Cranston 2 goals) at Browne Park.
