Manu can't wait for pre-season return
Sun November 6, 2011
Source: www.hullfc.com

Hull FC's Willie Manu is getting excited about what is in store when the squad return for pre-season training later this month ahead of what he hopes to be a rewarding year.

The Black and Whites Player of the Year will return to training with the challenge to impress new coach Peter Gentle, despite an impressive season in 2011.

However, with a new era set to start under the Australian and his new coaching staff, Manu admits the door is open for everyone to stake a claim for a place in the team.

"I think it's been well documented so far that Peter Gentle will come in and treat it all as a clean slate and we have to earn our place in the team, but for me that is quite exciting," he told www.hullfc.com.

"We can all see the excitement around the club at the moment, the fans are already getting ready for the new season and our first taste of that comes when we start training again.

"Whilst we all look forward to a break and some time with our families, it's always great to get back with the lads and training again and I think we're all really up for getting stuck in again."

Gentle and his coaching team won't be the only new faces around the club's new Elite Performance Training Centre at Hull YPI Sports Centre, as a further seven new additions to the squad will also be in place for pre-season.

With a blend of youth and experience set to join the first-team ranks, Manu is eager to see the impact they can have,

"I'm really looking forward to meeting the new lads and seeing what they'll bring to the squad," commented the Tongan.

"We have a good group of players here and it seems we have some players that sound like they'll fit that sort of bill.

"With players like Lynch and Martin, their experience speaks for itself, whilst to have three NRL players joining the club adds plenty of quality.

"But I think it will be just as exciting to see how the younger guys go like Ellis and O'Carroll and not to forget some of our young lads too, like Kenty, Green and Reece Lyne, they've all been there or thereabouts and it's probably a good chance for them to shine now too."

Manu will be one of the highlights at the KC Stadium once again next season and you can see the impact he'll have alongside the new signings by signing up for your new 2012 Season Pass right now.

Passes are available from just £49 and can be bought in person at the KC Stadium retail store or by calling 01482 505 600.

If you buy before the end of December you will receive your pass at a discounted price. For full terms and conditions, prices and payment details, including the Direct Debit option.

2010 DISCORD 31: Manu or Heighington for England, O'Donnell's Quote & International Double Headers
Wed July 28, 2010
by Steve Mascord
WILLIE Manu's selection in the preliminary England World Cup squad raises the following question: how did he make it and Chris Heighington didn't?.

Manu was a workmanlike player for Wests Tigers, South Sydney and St George Illawarra who has turned out six times for Tonga.

One of the reasons England gave for selecting Maurie Fa'asavalu between 2007 and 2009 was that he had never played for Samoa in rugby league and never would.

Yet Manu's history with the Tongans has clearly not discouraged new coach Steve McNamara. Willie may indeed be a worthy footballer for Hull FC but is he likely to do more damage to the Australians and Kiwis than Wests Tigers' Heighington, who qualifies on parentage?

I think not.

I would say that the message is clearly 'you have to be in Super League to get a start with England' - but then there's Gareth Widdop who is a Toyota Cup player!

It's one of the more confusing selections in a year that saw Queensland drop Israel Folau when he joined AFL, only to pick him back up again when Brent Tate was injured.

The message there - 'we'd rather someone going to Aussie Rules than someone (Lote Tuqiri) coming back from rugby union'!

----------

I'D like to nominate North Queensland's Luke O'Donnell as an early entrant in the Quote Of The Season competition.

Discussing Newcastle's complaints that the final pass for the winning try on Saturday night had been forward, Luke told a media scrum: "We have struggled all year with those 50-50 calls so I'd have to say one word: bad luck."

"Bad luck" is two words.

----------

IN case you missed it - and I'm betting you did - there will be two international double-headers at the end of the season.

We all know about the Four Nations event at Eden Park on November 6, where Australia plays New Zealand and England clashes with Papua New Guinea.

But on October 16 at Mt Smart Stadium, the New Zealand-Samoa warm-up international will be preceded by England taking on the Maori.

Also, the Australia-PNG game is a double-header too with Tonga-Samoa the curtain-raiser at Parramatta Stadium.

Count me in.

----------

FEEDBACK time - and I can't believe the number of comments last week.

To Tony, I wouldn't say the players were 'exonerated' by Deloitte. Deloitte could not compel the players to talk, and in the absence of any evidence, the accountancy firm simply found that there was no proof that they knew of the rorts.

There's a difference.

As our friends at Fire Up! on fb radio said, you don't often
see episodes of CSI where the suspect refuses to answer questions and the show
finishes after 10 minutes!

To Gee, how is blaming the guilty party 'the easy way out'? You'll never get me to see this point of view or to accept 'everyone is doing it' as any sort of reasonable defence at all.

Your example regarding the Roosters is valid but it doesn't excuse the Storm, Warriors and Bulldogs who were caught. If you cheat the cap you might get away with it - sure.

But look what happens when you don't! That's why it's so important to have strong punishments when sides are caught - as a deterrent to those that aren't. The need for a deterrent is there because everyone acknowledges it's possible to cheat the cap and get away with it.

Alfie, if News wants to destroy the Storm, why are they going to put in $14 million this year?

Ferrett, the Storm could pay overs because News budgeted for them to lose $6 million a year and didn't look at the books too closely if it was less than that! They didn't GENERATE the money they gave players under the counter, it was a handout coming straight from the NRL's coffers.

And the problem with free market or cutting teams is that the WRONG TEAMS would disappear - like Newcastle. We would end up with a 1982 comp with Brisbane.

Regarding Peter O'Sullivan, I hear his camp contends all he did was organise a flight for Brett White. I'll keep my ear to the ground.

Joshua, forcing agents to sign stat decs about what they and their clients are getting is a measure that should be in force next year.

And to the person who asked how much the NRL gets from Sky New Zealand in rights money, the figure is 10 to 12 million.
