Five Warriors named in representative teams
Tue April 17, 2012
Source: www.warriors.co.nz

Five Warriors have been named in representative teams - four of them in the Kiwi squad - for next weekend's games in the stand-alone weekend set aside for the Anzac Test and the annual City-Country Origin match.

Vodafone Warriors captain Simon Mannering will be the Kiwis' most experienced player when he lines up in his 29th international in next Friday night's clash against Australia at Eden Park, just the second Anzac Test ever played here 14 years after the first in 1998.

Mannering (25) is joined in the Kiwis team by club-mates Manu Vatuvei, Ben Matulino and first-time Kiwi Shaun Johnson.

Vatuvei (26) returns to the national side for his 20th Test after last playing for his country - briefly - in the 2010 Four Nations when he lasted only a few minutes against England in Wellington before breaking his arm. Injuries have ruled him out of contention since.

Matulino (23), who has already made 93 NRL appearances, has been a front-line Kiwi selection since making his debut against France in 2009. One of the NRL's form front rowers this season, he's poised to play his 12th Test on Friday night.

Johnson (21) was chosen in the Kiwi touring party for last year's end-of-season Billy Kelly Cup Test against Australia and the following Four Nations campaign but he subsequently withdrew to recover fully from an ongoing back condition. He excelled for the Vodafone Warriors in their 44-22 NRL victory against the South Sydney Rabbitohs today, credited with four try assists.

Apart from Johnson, two other players included in the final 17 - Jesse Bromwich and Josh Hoffman - are yet to make their international debuts.

Included in the Australian team is New Zealand-born James Tamou (North Queensland) who has effectively turned his back on his home country after turning out for the New Zealand Maori in 2010.

Meanwhile, Warriors back rower Feleti Mateo has been named at loose forward in the City Origin team to face Country this coming Sunday (April 22).

Mateo's magic not enough to get Warriors home
Mon March 19, 2012
Source: www.warriors.co.nz

Feleti Mateo's virtuoso display wasn't quite enough to enable the Warriors to convert an indifferent start into an unforgettable victory when they lost 18-32 to the Bulldogs at Mount Smart Stadium.

The Vodafone Warriors owned the middle 45-minute period of the contest with a run of 18 unanswered points but their fate was dictated by the 16 points they conceded in the first 16 minutes and another 16 in the final 19 minutes.

Vodafone Warriors head coach Brian McClennan and the players lamented the effect the start had on their fortunes yet they equally derived value from the manner in which they had fought their way back into the match, only to be undone by a critical no-try ruling.

It came with the Bulldogs holding a precarious 22-18 lead at a stage when they were being forced to withstand numerous Vodafone Warriors raids on their line. From an attacking scrum, they went to their left edge, Nathan Friend serving it up for Shaun Johnson who linked with Mateo, the big man switching it inside for Kevin Locke to steam through and cross. It seemed to be a try for all money, at the very worst a benefit of the doubt decision, but the video referee found reason to disallow it much to the chagrin of Locke, his team-mates and most of the 17,067-strong crowd.

Had the try been rubber-stamped, as many anticipated it would be, it would have been 22-22 and 24-22 to the Vodafone Warriors with the conversion. It was patently a call which changed the complexion of the contest entirely.

It meant the Vodafone Warriors had to keep searching for an opportunity, rather than having the comfort of operating from in front. They pressed again, Johnson rolling a nicely-weighted grubber kick into the Bulldogs' in-goal in a bid to force a goal-line drop-out at the very least. Instead the electric Ben Barba swept the kick up, went on an arcing run around the kick-chase line and downfield before being checked by a fantastic cover tackle by Locke. It mattered not. A quick play the ball and a shift to the left created a second try for centre Jonathan Wright in the 76th minute and a 28-18 lead, followed by another try right on fulltime.

The late blowout in the score-line belied the intensity of the battle and the real shot the Vodafone Warriors had of stealing victory after starting disappointingly.

They'd gone into the match with a reshaped line-up. Returning from his ankle injury after missing just one game was centre Jerome Ropati while McClennan swapped three players in his originally named starting forward pack. Props Russell Packer and Ukuma Ta'ai came into the run-on side with Sione Lousi and Ben Matulino moving to the interchange while a similar rotation was made in the second row, Lewis Brown starting and Mateo going to the bench. There was also a positional switch with regular left wing Manu Vatuvei moving to the right and Bill Tupou taking Vatuvei's customary spot on the left.

The changes didn't help the Vodafone Warriors initially with the Bulldogs very nearly scoring through the mercurial Barba in the first few minutes. Moments later Barba redeemed himself to spark a 10-minute burst which yielded three tries and 16 points.

Just as quickly the momentum changed the moment Mateo was injected from the bench. First he shelled a lovely ball which James Maloney ripped onto, going 50 metres to score as he beat the chase from Barba and centre Josh Morris. Three minutes later Mateo's deft ball skills created a maiden NRL try for prop Lousi and the big second rower came close to engineering another before halftime.

He carried on with it the second half when he stepped this way and that, threw dummies to everyone and surged across for a try of his own before also throwing the key ball for Locke's would-be try later ruled out by the video referee.

In the end that decision and the start handed to the Bulldogs proved to be the Vodafone Warriors' undoing.

Apart from the outcome, they were also left with some concerns about an ankle injury which stopped Maloney for a few minutes when he was caught in a high shot by Bulldogs prop Aiden Tolman. He recovered to finish the match strongly but will need to be further assessed.

On a day when the Vodafone Warriors' defensive workload was well in excess of 300 tackles, the busiest tacklers were Nathan Friend and captain Simon Mannering, playing his 149th career game and set to mark his 150th against Gold Coast next Saturday night. Friend was credited with 44 tackles and Mannering with 41. Quite the standout tackle of the day was Mannering's try-saver on Bulldogs winger Bryson Goodwin; it beggared belief.

It turned into a forgettable return to Mount Smart Stadium with the Vodafone Junior Warriors also losing, their first home defeat in almost two years. However, the crowd of 17,067 was the club's third-best in the last 13 years for the first game of a season at Mount Smart.
