Raiders re-sign Josh McCrone
Wed September 21, 2011

The Canberra Raiders have continued to secure their playing roster for the future, with news today that Josh McCrone has re-signed with the club until the end of the 2014 season.

McCrone was contracted until the end of 2012, however his form over the past two seasons has given the club the indication that he is a player they must keep and he's contract has been extended for a further two seasons.

In a disappointing season for the Green Machine McCrone has been a shining light, taking on the playmaking responsibilities with Terry Campese out injured for the best part of 2011.

McCrone said he's happy to have his future sorted and is looking forward to the next phase of his career, but said he can't afford to slacken off with the amount of competition for positions within the club.

"It's great for me to be staying in Canberra and continuing to play for the Raiders. Canberra is my home now and to have my future sorted is a huge positive for me, my career and most importantly my family," McCrone said. "I can't afford to take the pre-season lightly as there are a number of players at the club such as Sam Williams and Michael Picker who will be competing for a spot in the halves next year and that's a healthy thing for the club."

Raiders Assistant Coach Andrew McFadden said McCrone's re-signing was good for the club, as Josh had showed signs in 2011 that he was a player who could stand up and lead the team.

"With what's been a pretty disappointing season with the club Josh has been one of the positives out of that, his form has been consistent all year and he's shown a lot of improvement," McFadden said. "Given the circumstances this year and missing Terry Campese, Josh has had to take a lot of the responsibilities on his shoulders and I think to be fair he's done a pretty good job."

McCrone back at seven for Raiders

Josh McCrone will return to the team in his preferred position of halfback this weekend, for the Raiders match against the Sea Eagles at Brookvale oval on Saturday.

McCrone played in the Queensland Cup last weekend, but has shown Raiders coaching staff enough from his performance that he's ready to come straight back into halfback against Manly.

An excited McCrone said he needed to go back to the Queensland Cup and work on some aspects of his game and said he's looking forward to coming back into the side as halfback.

"It's good to be back. The match for Souths Logan on the weekend was what I needed to get some confidence back and hopefully I can bring that back to the Raiders this week," McCrone said. "I'm happy with the way I played up there and I think I took more control and this was an area I wasn't at my best in first grade so I'm happy to be back with a chance."

The Raiders will also welcome back their State of Origin stars David Shillington and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, while Travis Waddell will start at hooker this weekend for the injured Glen Buttriss who is set to miss 3-4 weeks with an ankle injury.

Raiders Coach David Furner McCrone was ready to come back into the side at halfback, while he expects plenty of minutes for hooker Travis Waddell.

"Glen Buttriss will be out for a few weeks so Travis Waddell gets his chance to start, while Josh McCrone played well on the weekend for Souths Logan so he comes back in," Furner said. "We may look to use Adam Mogg on the bench as a utility player, but the bench hasn't been finalised yet."
