Mackay speedster Michael Thomas scored a hat-trick of tries against the Central Capras as the in-form Cutters nailed a third-straight Intrust Super Cup victory on Friday night.

The Cutters made a blistering start to the Men of League Rivalry Round match, with man of the moment Thomas finishing off two movements in the right corner.

But the Cutters lost their way a little after the promising opening, with a number of handling mistakes allowing the Capras to get on the front foot.

The visitors were rewarded after an enterprising passage of play saw centre Mitch Zornig barge his way over. The Capras then crossed again to hit the lead but that was the last moment of joy for the Central Queensland team.

A neat pass from Cutters five-eighth Grant Rovelli put fullback David Milne over the line for the home team's third try of the evening. Matt Minto's conversion handed the Cutters a 14-12 half-time lead.

The second half belonged to the Cutters, with the likes of Rovelli, Milne and centre Michael Morgan finding plenty of open space.

The Cutters put the finishing touches to another strong performance when Morgan sent Thomas scurrying away down the right flank.

Morgan and Rovelli loomed in support but Thomas was able to stand up the Capras' last line of defence to bag his third.

Mackay coach Anthony Seibold will now turn his focus to Sunday's Channel 9 match against Souths Logan at Davies Park, while the Capras will prepare for their round 8 clash against the Burleigh Bears.

The Mackay Cutters had their more experienced players to thank after they claimed their first win of the season with a 30-28 victory over the Norths Devils on Saturday.

Coming up against a fit and youthful Devils side, it was players like Grant Rovelli and David Milne who led the way.

"Norths are a good side, they are a quality side and they have a lot of good younger players in the team like Dale Copley and Brendon Gibb who played well," Cutters coach Anthony Seibold said of the game.

"The feedback from the players was that it was the fastest game they have played for a while.

"We started well ... and we gelled a lot better in attack and it was good to score some points.

"We had Matt Minto, Grant Rovelli and Michael Morgan all play so that helped our attack."

Skipper Rovelli more than managed to match it with his younger rivals when he scored a spectacular try in the win.

"David Milne made the break and got it inside for Grant to score the try.

He was great for us I thought," Seibold said of the try the local newspaper was touting as an early contender for try of the year.

After starting the season with two losses, Seibold said it was a relief to finally have a win under their belts; with the team still yet to face more challenging opposition in the weeks to come.

"We scooted out to a 30-18 lead but to their credit they scored two late tries to make it a close one," he said.

"We've had two close losses against Redcliffe and the Pride so it was good to get a win on the board ... and will give us a bit of confidence going into the next games."

The Cutters will prepare for another tough game this weekend when they host the Tweed Heads Seagulls at Virgin Australia Stadium.

MACKAY CUTTERS 30 (Michael Morgan 2, Michael Thomas, Grant Rovelli, Dane Hogan tries; Matt Minto 5 goals) def NORTHS DEVILS 28 (Dale Copley, Namila Davui, Daniel Ogden, Brendon Gibb, Jay Aston tries; Joel Bailey 4 goals) at Virgin Australia Stadium.
