Moa handed one match ban and £300 fine
Thu February 23, 2012
Hull FC forward Sam Moa will miss his club's Stobart Super League match at Salford City Reds on Friday through suspension.

The Tongan prop has been given a one-match ban and fined £300 by the Rugby Football League's disciplinary committee after they found him guilty of a dangerous shoulder charge on London Broncos hooker Julien Rinaldi.

Moa, who was sent off for the offence in the 61st minute of Hull's 22-14 victory on Sunday, pleaded guilty but, according to the RFL, failed to persuade the committee that the tackle did not warrant a ban.

Moa thinks Hull FC is the place to be

Hull FC have fought off fierce competition from a number of rival Super League clubs to secure the signature of fan's favourite Sam Moa.

The 23-year-old has decided that Hull is the best place for him, agreeing a two-year contract with the Airlie Birds.

Speaking after signing the deal, Moa said, "This has been one of the hardest decisions of my career, but I know I have made the right one.

"I think Hull are a club on the rise, they have a strong squad with some excellent players and I really wanted to be a part of that.

"They gave me an opportunity and I worked hard this year but now it is down to me to prove to myself I have what it takes to make it at this level and make sure I can be a strong and consistent performer for Hull FC."

He added, "I play hard and aggressive and I want to bring that to the table next season, this year has helped me mature as a player and now it is time for me to kick on and I know this is the place for me to do that."

Hull FC head coach Richard Agar also commented, "It is good news for the club and I am delighted we have managed to secure his signature.

"He produced some good performances on the run in to the end of the season and deserved a new deal.

He went on to say, "It is a credit to Sam, that after a slow start, he got into some good form and understandably a number of clubs have shown an interest.

"But I am pleased he feels Hull FC is the best place for him to progress in his career, he is happy here and a popular member of the squad amongst players, staff and fans a like.

"I am already looking to seeing some more of his bullock-like charges next season!"

The Tongan international has proved to be a big hit at the KC Stadium following his arrival from Cronulla Sharks during the 2009 season.

Described as a 'project' by Agar on his arrival, Moa has done enough to impress the coaching staff and earn a new contract.

During 2009, the 23-year-old prop made 15 appearances for the Airlie Birds after arriving late at the club, due to the visa problems that blighted a number of top-flight sides this year.

Following his debut against Huddersfield, when he came on as a replacement, Moa went on to have a brief spell in the reserves to pick up some much needed match fitness.

Nevertheless, he was soon back in the first-team fold and impressed with a string of solid performances, including a good showing against Hull Kingston Rovers in the controversial derby defeat at Craven Park.

The arrival of new team mate, international colleague and friend Epalahame Lauaki also seems to have encouraged Moa's performances, alongside fellow Tongan star and Hull FC Player of the Year Willie Manu.

All three, now coined 'The Tongan Mafia' by the clubs supporters, showed some positive intent in the final few games of the season and they could prove to be a formidable trio against many clubs next year.

Moa said, "I like to play with Willy and Hame, we look after each other on the field and we are always together off it and that has really helped me settle over here.

"However, I have made some really good mates after joining Hull, the lads have been great to me and I have to say the spirit in the camp right now is second to none, we have a belief and like I say, I wanted to be part of that."

The new deal for Moa could also help further his international opportunities.

The powerful forward picked up three caps during the 2008 World Cup and Super League football will certainly help him retain a place in the Tongan national side.

The news of the deal will also go down well with the Old Faithful as Moa has quickly established himself as a fans favourite at the club.

His hard-working and committed displays on the field, coupled with his positive attitude off it, have been well received by the Hull supporters who are desperate to see more of the Tongan man next season.

As for Hull, it is the latest exciting move ahead of the 2010 season.

Confirmation of a new deal for Moa, alongside the signings of fellow Super League stars Sean Long and Jordan Turner as well as the imminent arrival of the world class Aussie pairing of Craig Fitzgibbon and Mark O'Meley, means the future looks bright for the Black and Whites.
