Second stress fracture for Cross
Thu September 29, 2011
There will be no fairytale ending to Ben Cross' cameo Wigan Warriors career after it was revealed he has broken his arm for a second time.

The 32-year-old Australian front rower, who joined the Warriors on a short-term contract in July after being released by Leeds Rhinos, broke his forearm on his fourth appearance against Salford City Reds in August.

That ruled him out of the Carnegie Challenge Cup final but he made a surprise return against St Helens in the opening play-off fixture 11 days ago and was in line to bow out with a possible Grand Final appearance.

However, he complained of soreness after the Saints game and x-rays have now indicated another stress fracture.

Cross is leaving Wigan at the end of the season, having signed a 12-month deal with Engage Super League new boys Widnes Vikings.

Wigan coach Michael Maguire said: "It is disappointing for Ben. He won't figure again for us."

Maguire expects centre Joel Tomkins to be available for Saturday's qualifying semi-final against St Helens at the Stobart Stadium after coming off against Catalan Dragons with a leg injury last Sunday.

Wigan also hope prop Lee Mossop will be fit to return after aggravating a hamstring injury in the warm-up on Sunday.

Wigan keep Mossop until November 2014

Wigan Warriors are delighted to confirm that 21 year old Second Row Forward, Lee Mossop, has signed a new 5-Year Contract with the Club including a revision of his current Contract which will keep him as a Warriors player until November 2014.

Mossop's current deal was due to expire at the end of next Season and his new Contract includes an option in Wigan's favour for the final year.

Lee joined Wigan as a 15 year old from Hensingham ARLFC in Cumbria and has come through the Club's Youth Development Programme. He was a member of the Wigan Accelerate Squad in 2009. He made a try-scoring debut in 2008 for the First-Team against SM Pia XIII in the Challenge Cup and, in 2009, made 10 appearances for the Warriors off the bench after impressing on loan at Barrow Raiders and Huddersfield Giants. Lee has also represented England at Academy level.

The 21 year old has made 7 appearances out of 8 off-the-bench this Season in an exhilarating start by Wigan and has been one of the Club's stand- out players.

Speaking about the news, Chairman Ian Lenagan said:

"We are delighted that Lee has agreed a new long-term contract with Wigan. He is one of our most talented young players and has a great future ahead in the game. He is big, strong and courageous and is one of the new breed of Wigan-developed players who is targeting trophy-winning and International success over the next few years with Wigan."

Michael Maguire added:

"Lee has worked very hard since my arrival and he has impressed me with his attitude and commitment. He has made a great start for us to the new Season and he has a wonderful future ahead in the game."

Lee Mossop commented,

"I am thrilled to commit my long-term future to Wigan. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Club since joining some six years ago and it was always my hope to work hard and earn another Contract with them. There have been some rumours linking me with a move to the NRL but this was never my intention at this stage of my career. The Wigan Club is heading in a great direction under Michael and his staff and it is my aim to do all I can to help Wigan's success and to earn some silverware in the years to come."
